Some Interesting Statistics Regard
ing tho Probable Success of tho
From tho North American Rcvlow.
Tho Suoz Cnnnl, with almost a
huudrod inilos of continuous dig
ging, cost about $100,000,000. Of
this sum $30,000,000 wore wnstod in
intorost, commissions, changes of
location and bad management. That
canal has now a trailio of 9,000,000
tons annually, aud it must bo speedi
ly onlargod to accommodato tho
commorco thnt is crowding through
it to tho wostom coast of tho Pacific
Ocoan. Tho Nicaragua Caunl has
twenty-nino and a half inilos of canal
prism, or axial, lino.
Of this ono-third is vory light
drodgmg. Tho total length of this
transit from soa to soa is 1G9 milos;
of this lino 155J miles is slack water
navigation at an olovation of 110
foot abovo tho lovol of tho sea. This
small lift is overcome by six locks
throo on oithor sido of tho lake. Tho
ontiro cost of tho canal ready for
uso, as estimated by Mr. Monocal,
allowing 25 porcont for contingen
cies, is $65,081,170.
A Board of fivo other onginoors
wont over Mr. Monocal's measure
ments and estimates with groat care,
nud out of abundant caution, and
not bocauso of any substantial
change in his figuroB, tlioy added to
ma estimate anotnur zu porcont lor
contingencies, and so changed His
estimate as to mako tho total cost of
tho canal, ready for service, $87,799,
570. It seoms that this may bo reason
ably accepted as tho outside cost of
tho canal. But, if wo run up tho
conjectural cost to $100,000,000, if
built for that sum, it must bo tho most
valuable proporty in tho world of its
magnitude. Xho touuago, annually,
can scarcoly fall bolow that of tho
Suoz Canal. It will gradually ex
ceed that amount. If it is two-thirds
as groat as that which passes through
tho St. Mary's Canal on the lakes it
will equal $9,000,000 tons.
Who does not know that it must
bo greater than tho traffic supplied
by so small an area of inland coun
try? A just estimate would bo fixed
confidently by tho most caroful aud
unhesitating persons at 9,000,000
tons per annum, to saj' nothing of
income from passengers, of whom
swarms will emigrate to tho Pacific
Coast. On this estimate wo could
place tho tolls at tho rate of $1 per
ton and realize $9,000,000 per an
num. Take $3,000,000 of this sum for
maintenance of tho canal, which will
not exceed half that sum; $3,000,000
for interest on tho bonded debt, and
$3,000,000 for tho stockholders, and
we will have a result that should ox
cito the cupiditj of the most grasp
ing speculator. But tho true friend
of the industrial and commercial
people will seo in this result a sav
ing to industry aud commerce of
more than one-half tho charges for
tonnage that are now paid to the
If tho United States is tho" owner
of $8.0,000,000 of the $100,000,000 of
tho stock in this canal, and if it is to
cost $100,000,000 to build it, tho
dividends on that $80,000,000 of
stock, employed in a Sinking fund
aud invested in tho bonds of tho
companj', would pay tho ontiro cost
of construction and tho interest of
tho bonds in less than fifty yoars.
THE VIRGINIA DEBT.
A History that Is Supposed to Givo
Aid in Opposition to Home Rule.
Richmond, Va., May 2. Tho Vir
ginia debt question, is to play an in
teresting part in tho struggle now
going on in England over Glad
stone's Home Rule bill. English
Conservatives of high position have
applied to W. L. Royall for a his
tory of tho contest in the courts be
tween tho State of Virginia and her
creditors as an objoct-losson to show
what may take place in Ireland
under Homo Rule. They think it
will prove that tho nominal control
over Irish affairs which the bill re
serves to England will be utterly
nugatory in view of tho way Virgi
nia passed now acts to nullify the
effect of decisions of tho Supremo
Court of tho United States through
evasions and devices, which acts
wore put in force and execution
ponding tho intorvals for getting
now decisions from tho Supremo
Court. This document is intended
for tho guidance of leaders in Par
liament who are opposing Glad
stone's policy. Royall prepared sucli
a history about two years ago, in
which ho recited all the details of
the contest. He has sent his manu
script to tho Conservatives, aud it is
to be presented to Parliament at
onco. Royall was, until tho sottlo-
