ROMANCE OF CHICAGO.
(.Continued from 1st Page.)
Mnny strangers who visit Chicago
predict a spoody end to tho prosotit
feverish impulse to swoll tho numbor
of thoso lofty structures. Thoy
argue that tho tall buildings darkon
tho ( strootB and mnko tho lower
storios of opposito houses liko so
many collars or damp and dark base
ments. Othor reasons aro that tho
groat numbor of tall and splendid
offices housos has depreciated tho
value of tho humbler proporty in
thoir neighborhoods. Four ana five
story housos are no longer attrac
tive, because thoir ownors cannot
afford tho conveniences that apper
tain to tho largor edifices, whoro
light and heat is provided free, whoro
fireproof safes aro fixed for ovory
tenant, whoro hosts of servants, har
bor shops, restaurants, cigar and
news stands, oloyatora and numer
ous othor conveniences aro regarded
as matters of course
A OUIOAQOAN ARCHIES DIFFERENTLY.
Ho can porcoivo no reason vvhy tho
square half mile- which comprises
tho entire business heart of tho
town, should not all soon bo covered
with cloud-capped towors. "There
will bo nood of thom," ho says, "and
tho money to defray the cost of
them will accompany tho domand."
Tho clogging of tho streets with
people, as streets wore novor clogged
boloro, is tno only uiiucuity no per
ceives" in tho solution of tho pro
blem. OnljT a small section of tho
city is hore referred to; the whole
city comprises an area of 181J- square
milos. Chicago expects to become
the largest city in America in tho
course of fifty years largor than
the consolidated cities that may
form New York at that time.
A consideration of tho causes that
have made Chicago what she is to
day and full of tho expectancy of
tuturo greatness reveals tno tact
that sho seomB always to have been,
as now, a city of young men. A
Chicagbau accounts for tho low
death rate by the assertion that evon
its leading men are
NOT YET OLD ENOUGH
to die. In tho early days, after the
close of tho war, tho youthfulnoss
of tho leading business men was the
most surprising feature. Marshall
Field, Potter Palmer, and tho rest,
at tho head of very large mercantile
housos, wore young follows. Men
under thirty were loading in all
branches of commerce and industry,
and much the same thing obtains
Then ovory individual or section
of Chicago business men is familiar
with the whole country; with the
differing districts of the entire west,
north and south; with thoir crops,
financial status, industries, and
means of intercommunication. Their
business field is the world; they talk
not of one section only or of Europe,
but discuss the affairs of the entire
universe. The figures with which
they deal reveal how vast and
wealthy a region acknowledges Chi
cago as its market and its .financial
and trading centre.
by which Chicago is riveted to the
midland, the southorn and tho west
ern country outer the city by thirty
five tracks. Twenty-two of these
are groat companies, and at a short
distance sub-radials made by other
railways raise tho number to fifty
roads and servo 30,000,000 persons.
A vast population is thus easily con
nected with a common centre, to
which products may be brought, and
from which everything may be
economically distributed. Tho rapid
increase in wealth of both the city
and tho tributary region is due to
tho fact that every year both pro
duce more, and have more to sell
and less to buy. Not long ago tho
rule was that a stream of goods ran
eastward over tho Alleghanies, and
another stream of supplies came
back, so that tho West had little
gain to show. But now the back
setting current is a stream of money
returned for tho products tho West
has distributed. Tho West is now
soiling to tho East and to Europe
and getting money in return, be
cause it is manufacturing for itsolf
as well as tilling the soil and mining
for tho rest of the world. It now,
therefore, earns money, instead of
continuing to toil merely to obtain
from the East tho necessaries of life.
This is tho major reason of Chicago's
peculiarity. For years, in company
with the entire Western country,
sho has boon making money only
TO PAY DEBTS WITH.
That, they say, is why Chicago
men have only talked business; why
sho has had no leisure class, or reser
voir of homo capital seeking invest
ment. These conditions having
changed now that sho is producing
more and buj ing less tho rest will
Chicago has become tho third
manufacturing city, in tho union,
and she is drawing manufacturers
away from tho oast faster ovory day.
Tho Troy stove-makincr establish
ment, tho Massachusetts shoe-factory
and many othor groat estab
lishments have gone there and
mauy more must follow, because
Chicago is not only the centre of
tho midland region in respect of tho
distribution of mado-up wares, but
also for tho concentration of raw
materials. In tho manufacture of
all goods of which wood, load and
iron aro tho bases Chicago must
load. When Chicago took tho load
in tho moat trado tho revolution af
foctod tho whole of tho leather and
aro dropped ovory weok in Chicago
and tho trado Jb confinod to Chicago.
St. Louis, Kansas City, Omaha and
St. Paul. Wisconsin has become a
groat tamiiug state, and all around
Chicago aro factories and factory
towns whoro hides aro turned into
The scionco of praolioal busiuoss
ljos in tho praotico of economy. Chi
cago lias in abundance all tho fuels
oxcopt hard coal Sho has coal, oil,
stono, brick everything that is
noodod for building mid for living.
"Manufacturers gravitate to such u
pluco for ocouomicul roaaous. Tho
population of tho North Atlantio
division, including Pounsylvania and
Massachusetts, and acknowledging
Now York as its centre, is 17,401,000,
Tho population of tho Northoru
Coutral division, trading with Chi
cago, is 22,802.279." Each succood
ing consus shifts tho contro of popu
lation farther west. Tho succoss of
Chicago demonstrates anow tho ac
tive truth that onorgy is a greater
forco than money it commands
money. Verily, Chicago is an im
monso exhibit in itsolf.
