Tied to a Trunk.
In tho parlor car sat a richly
dressed noting woman, tenderly
holding a very small poodle. ''Ma
dam,'' said the conductor, as ho
punched hor ticket, ''I am very sorry,
but you cannot havo 3'our dog in
this car." "1 shall hold him in my
lap all tho way,'' she replied, "artd
ho will disturb no ouo." "That
makes no dilTurence," said tho con
ductor. "1 couldn't allow my own
dog here. Dogs must ride in tho
baggage car. I'll fasten him all
right lorou " "Don't you touch
my dog, sir," said the young woman
excitedly. "1 will trust him to no
one." And with indignant tread she
marched to tho baggage car, tied
hor dog and returned. About fifty
miles further on, when tho conduc
tor came along again, she askod him:
"Will joti tell mo if my dog is all
right?" "1 am very sorry," said tho
conductor politely, "but you tied
him to a trunk, and ho was thrown
olf with it at the last station."
Too Important.
A cortain dry goods clerk was in
tho habit of sa iug to his associates
that tho concern would find it pretty
hard to got along without him.
These remarks came to the ears of
tho senior partner, and ho callod tho
clerk into tho inner otlice.
"Mr. Jenkins," ho began, "you aro
very elliciout, and wo highly appreci
ate your hervices, but wo havo hoard
it haul that worn jou to die, tho busi
ness could not possibly survive tho
loss. This hab worried us a groat
deal, for you, like all tho rest of us,
aro liable to diop off suddenly. Wo
havo concluded, therefore, for our
peace of mind, to experiment while
vvo aro both iu good health, and soo
if the concern can boar up undor
jour loss. You will accordingly con
sider yourself dead for onoyear, and
wo will try to got on without you
for that length of time." C'uaoiit'uii
