Editor Bulletin:
Ploasoopon tho columns of your
valuablo'pnpor to inform our wholo
community of the following crying
facts:
Tho last session of tbo Circuit
Court in Wailuku is noticoablo for a
horrid rofusal of justice much to
tho dishonor and shamo of tho par
ities whoso solomn duty it was to ad-
mimstor justice.
On May 27th a littlo Portuguoso
girl of Paia, Maui, Maria Carroira,
10 years old, daughor of, Manool
Iiodriguos Carroira, whilst gathoring
grass together with hor older brothor
on tho fiolds of tho plantation, is
assailod and brutally abusod by a
kanaka boy, Kahulu Mau, about 18
years old, so much that tho child
has boon undor tho dootor's treat
ment ovor sinco.
Tho fathor of tho child causod tho
brutal boy to bo arrested, and tho
Police Justico finding a foundation
for tho charge, committed him for
trial to tho Second Circuit Court at
Wailuku, Maui. Tho caso camo off
on Juno 18th, and notwithstanding
tho plain ovidonco of an oyewitnoss
(tlio older brothor of tho victim) to
gether with tho statomont of tho
physician, yet tho jurors (12 kanakas)
rendered a verdict of not guilty. And
tho judgo, unmindful of the ovidonco
brought boforo tho court, seals tho
crying injustice by acquitting tho
guilty boy. Shall wo havo to stand
such a situation?
Although natives aro known to bo
very licentious, yet they would not
commit thoir abuses except with
thoir own kind and never use any
violence against any person unwill
ing much loss assail any person not
of thoir own race. And now start
ing in that now direction, thoy aro
not chocked rather encouraged by
escaping punishment, and how will
this end? Just think of this now
chance of forcing loprosy into our
families.
If in America private individuals
prevent tho regular course of justico
by lynching such criminals, how
much moro reason would thoro bo
here for such a course, as tho regular
ministers of justico refuse to do thoir
duty? Let fathers and mothers rea
lizo well what awaits their daughters
in future if such heinous crimos as
tho above mentioned are dealt lightly
with. Thoro is a petition in circula
tion addressed to the Portuguese
Consul and I hope and trust that it
will have tho effect of not allowing
this affair to ba buried alive. Let
justico bo done and should heaven
fall down over it.
Father James Beissel.

Editor Bulletin:
There is ouo thing brought before
the public by tho attempted annexa
tion steal, that tho authors of can
rest assured will not soon bo forgot
ten. I refer to tho cowardly slan
derers of a defenseless woman, tho
Queen. Tho public have been treat
ed with slander galore from S. E.
Bishop and a few others, and now
comes anothor from the same
school, Dr. C. F. Nichols in tho Ad
vertiser of Juno 17. Below is what
tho bold doctor slings at a woman:
"Sorrowful indeed must be our
thoughts as wo review Liliuokalani's
short career. Alasl poor queon!
Provoked as the world has been by
your duplicity, there is much to
pity. How sad to you will be the
transfer from your life of old. No
witch-woman on your horizon, thon,
and known as tho Princess Lydia, so
named at school where you were
taught your letters by tho mission
aries. Very happy and haughty' and
handsome you looked, with fine
black lace ovor the ample folds of
your gown of rich China silk; free
thon your will, conscience and char
acter, until a certain fierce light has
laid bare your cowardice, fickleness,
hesitancy, and truly no character "at
all, with final forfeit of crown jewels
and leis in a panic of ingrained sav
age superstition.
Now, then, who is Dr. Nichols?
If we are not mistaken, he is one of
tho lessor ornaments of tho profes
sion who, failing to make a success
in America, migrated to these shores,
and was fortunate enough to get a
pull at tho Government teat. What
the doctor expects to gain by his
unmanly and cowardly attack upon
a woman, we know not. It may bo
money paid in hand, or something
promised in tho sweet byo-and-bye.
If it is something promised, we will
wagor that tho promise is never ful
filled. Furthermore wo will wagor,
that the doctor is one of those littlo
souls, who would grovel in the dust
boforo a company of five hundred
persons or moro, and kiss tho Queen's
foot if so requested, inside of two
months, or it may happen sooner.
It seems tho gallant doctor, in order
to satiate his vicious spirit to tho
brim, has gone back a hundred years
and clawed ovor every old and musty
heap of filth imaginablo, that ho in
his fiendish glee might down a
woman; who until lately was courted
and fotod by tho fairest in the land.
Below is a glass that tho doctor and
his ilk in slander may soo thoir
characters portrayed in, as others
seo them:
"Slander, whose edge is" sharper than the
sword; whose tongue
Outvenoms all tho worms of Nilo; whose
breath
Rides on tho posting winds, and doth belie
All corners of tho world: kings, queens.
and states,
Maids, matrons, nay, tho secrets of tho
grave,
ThlB viperous slander enters."

Tho Political Situation
Remains outwardly unchanged sinco
our last issuo, and will so romain un
til tho President of tho United
States takes action on Commissioner
Blount's report. That tho Commis
sioner has made a searching investi
gation whothor tho Provisional Gov
ernment was established with or
without tho aid of tho United States
forces thoro is littlo doubt. By this
time his roport is probably in tho
hands of the Prosidont. Moauwhilo
tho Quoon and tho native pooplo
await with calmness and pationco
tho decision of tho Govornmont of
tho United Statos, confident that if
on tho ovidonco it shall bo found
that a groat wrong has beon dono,
that wrong will bo rodrossod. Not
withstanding much to causo indig
nation and irritation among tho poo
plo on tho part of those in power,
thoro has boon no disturbanco in any
part of the Kingdom. .No bettor
tost of thoir fitness for solf-govorn-mont
could have boon applied to a
pooplo than that which tho Hawai
mns havo stood for the last five
months. Whatever danger thoro has
boon to lifo and proporty has beon
from tho foroign soldiers of tho Pro
visional Army firing thoir rifles un
der tho influence of liquor or imagin
ary fears.
An Amorican from Now York vis
iting tho Islands has written as fol
lows in appreciation of tho articles
that appeared in our March num
ber: ''Having read your articles in
tho Diocesan Magazine, and in tho
daily papers, it will bo, I hope, par
donable in mo to express my thanks
as an Amorican and a lover of fair
play and honesty for your words.
Some twenty copies of the Magazine
I bought and sent to proper persons
at homo. You nave told tho truth;
and divors persons find that un
palatable. "Though tho lust of conquest and
acquisition is very 6trong, I hope
my country may do justice, and our
President is, we believe, an honest
ana fearless man." Honolulu Dioce
