A party of visitors, including bov

in a largo Hold near to tho Harrow
Station of tho Loudon and North
Wostoru Railway on Monday wook
to soo a trial of an iugonious appar
atus, in appoaranco very liko a gi
gantic Veuotian blind oxtondod by
lraming. Tho machine was support
ed on thrco whucls about a foot in
diamotor, one of which was attached
to tho und of a long jib extending
about twouty-livo foot to tho front.
A wood circular track about four
foot wido was mado all round the
Hold, a strong post was orootod in
tho centre, and to it was attached a
wire which, connected to tho ma-
tlhinb, koptt jt .Vwhun in motion on
tho circular track. Tho fifty laths
of tho Venetian grating woro twenty
two feet long and one and one-half
inch broad, very thin, and scooped
out on the under side, and rounded
correspondingly at top. They wero
superposed at short distances to tho
height of ton foot. Two fans, having
an area of .about four superficial
feet, wero driven by a steam-engine
in front of tho grating at tho rate of
J00 revolutions a minute. Tho woight
of tho carriage was 60 pounds, of tho
engine 200 pounds, aud of tho grat
ing of sustainors 70 pounds in all
li.'iO pounds. Tho extra loading of
the carriage with shot to tho extent
of 72 pounds, gives a total of 402
pounds, which was propolled by tho
l'ans at something like the rate, by
estimation, of twonty-iivo miles an
Hour, and whon the machine faced
tho wind it rose from two foot to
three feet clear of the track for tho
distauco of about half tho circle
The inventor is Mr. Horatio Phil
lipps, a working mechanician, who
has spent, it is said, twenty-eight
years of his life on aeronautical
problems. Loudon Exchange.

Handling the Pineapple.
Tho pineapple is even more diffi
cult to handle in transit than the
banana, aud any bunching, packing,
or ilattening in loading will result
in a loss of fully ouo-third of tho
cargo. At times, if the weather is
uxtromoly warm, fully ouo-third of
the vessel's load is found in a soft or
decaying condition when it arrives
here, nuu, through tho swoating and
rotting of the fruit, much that is
not actually decayed, and might
Ltavo proved marketable, is spoiled
by contact with tho other. Whon
the schooner is made fast to her
dock, and tho usual formula of sign
ing papers by tho parties to whom
tho fruit is consigned has been car
ried out, the hatches aro removed,
and experienced pickers, or sorters,
and counters aro stationed at the
hatchways to receive, sort, count,
and deliver to tho purchasing parties
such quantities that may bo called
for on orders received.
There is a man who sits beside tho
counters, aud his duty is to score
all counts and rendor a total to tho
consignee As fast as tho baskots
tilled with pines aro handed over
the guard of the hatchway, the sort
ers grasp them, and discarding any
fruit spotted or rotting, count in
pairs until their baskets aro filled, or
thoy have reached fifty, whon "tab"
is culled aud tho scorer marks 100
upon his slip. When out-ot-town
orders aro being filled, tho "pines"
are carriod rapidly to a row of cars
upon a float near at hand, aud after
''excelsior" has boon spread upon
their iloors the cars aro loaded with
fruit designed for shipment. Arabs
and commission merchants, or order
men, come to the vessel and buy
such lots as they may desire. Balti
