Tho expedition of Lieut. Dunji to
tho Kurilo islands has come to a
tragic end. About tho last of March
tho Lioutonant, with a party of
thirty mon, set out in small boats
from Tokio to tho inhospitable Ku
rilos to form a wttlomont.
Such a long voyage northward in
boats so smali, 'nvostod tho expedi
tion with peculiar hazard and inter
est. The Emppror contributed to
itho aid of the enterprise and tho
people regarded it with enthusiasm,
as the band of mon were of tried
military capacity. But the expedi
tion came to a sudden ond, two of
the boats, with seventeen mon, be
ing lost in a storm.
