YOUNG MEN DID IT.
Thoy Stvvod tho Union in tho Irro
prossiblo Conflict.
Young mun and womon, boforo
you go forth lo-da to docorato tho
boldiors' graves, please stop and con
bider who thoy wuro. Old mont No,
a thousand times no; young as you
are uow, for tho most part. Old men
don't go to war. Your flag wai
saved untarnished and 3our country
preserved undivided by young men
about your own ages. Did you over
think of thatt 1 do not wonder; I
do not blamo you for speaking of
tho "old soldiers' graves," because
many of tho dear old comrades
whoso funerals you have witnessed
wore old men when they died. Now
and then tho Grand Army of tho
Republic marches out to tho ceme
tery with muffled drum and arms
reversed to bury a comrade to whom
death is the very best frioud for ho
was old and wrinkled and gray with
years and infirmities. But romombor
that only a very small proportion of
tho soldiors whoso deeds of glory wo
commemorato to-day, and whobo
graven wo garnish with tho fairest
flowers in tho laud, over felt the
touch of ago boforo thoy felt tho
hand of death on their palo brows.
For tho most part our heroes were
only boys. Six hundred thousand of
thorn died during tho war, 100,000
in battle, 100,000 in rebel prisons,
100,000 in hospitals or at their
mother's side, the young and beauti
ful mart3'rs of tho Union! To bo
sure there wore a fow, a very few old
men in tho army, and of course somo
of theso perished iu tho groat con
flict; but wuoro thoro was one such,
thoro wore 50 boys under 20 years of
ago. TUo probable average age oi
tho boys in blue was 22, raoro under
than over that age, so that nearly
all who foil in tho war perished iu
their youth and beauty. Of 12,462
who starved to death for tho flag at
Audersonville, not 10,000 were old
enough to vote. Of 60-13 killed and
wounded at Gettysburg, and of 11,
030 killed and wounded at Ghan
eellorsville, tho majority had not
seen their 20th year. Those there
fore who died during tho war wore
either lads or for tho mo-jt part very
young men.
But what of the million who died
since 1865? A vast majority of them
never saw their 35th year! With a
low exceptions thoy uieu in tho
vigor of their young manhood. Thoy
gave their yearn for you and mo as
truly as if they had perished iu the '
fierce and raging turmoil of tho bat
tle. Do not think of thorn as old
men, whom death would have claim
ed loug ere this if war had never
burst upon us with all its horrors.
From this time on, tho three part
ing shots will echo only above vet
erans of full age, and by and by only
over venerable, gray-haired men, for
our average ago (of tho million Union
soldiers yet surviving) is about 51 or
52 years rather under than over
that. Mauy of us aro already very
old, and all of us are aging fast, but
wo never think of tho comrades gouo
boforo but as young men, ''iu tho
morn and liquid dow of youth," the
bravest and strongest young men
the world over saw. Private Dalzell
of Ohio.
THE CODE OF PEACE.
Worthy Effort of Sir Charles Bussell
at tho Bohring Sea Tribunal.
Sir Charles Russoll concluded his
argument iu behalf of tho British
case before the Bohring sea tribunal
of arbitration at Paris Wednesday.
Ho said that this was tho iirtt occa

declared, was unteuablo, and its ad
vancement was derogatory to tho
principle of freedom of tho soas. It
was au extravagant and unfounded
pretension that international law
sanctioned tho seizure and condem
nation of tho vesselb of a friendly
power. Existing international laws
were an ofioctivo and noble instru
ment to borvo tho just purposes of
mankind in tho adjudication of their
rights. Ho appealed to tho tribunal
to declare that it could not mako
law. Sir Charles iu his peroration
dwelt upon tho importance of tho
arbitration here submitted to by the
two great poworb, ono representing
old world civilization, groat iu ox
tont of dominion and greater in long
enduring traditions of liberty, tho
othor a young but stalwart member
of tho family of nations, great also
iu territory and almost boundless iu
the resources, genius and outorpribo
of its people, and possessing enor
mous powers for good iu the future
of tho human race. Their presence
as friendly litigants is a fact of great
moral significance, anil their submis
sion to arbitration is a victory for
poaco, as tho award will bo, if it
leaves tho principles of international
law uutouched.
At tho close of Sir Charles Rus
sell's address tho president of tho
court, Baron do Cotircel, spoke iu
complimentary language of tho abil
