BEATING OP THE VALKYRIE.
Still Bho is Considered a Fit Com
petitor for tho American Cup.
Tho Boyal Thames club regatta,
one o tho most ovontful contests of
tho yachting yoar, took placo in
England last wook. Interest in tho
raco was contorod in Lord Dim
raven's now yacht, tho Valkyrio,
which was viowod and studied with
tho groatost iutorost. Tho Frinco of
Wales's cuttor won tho raco, and tho
prince oxprossod himsolt highly
satisfied with tho porformaiico of
his boat, which was ouo of tho threo
Scotch cutters recently built on tho
Clyde for this season's racing. Tho
Valkyrio was second, tho Ivoma
third, and tho Calluna fourth.
About a third of tho way homo on
tho return courso the Valkyrie's top
sail was smashed. At the timo of
tho accident sho was but ono length
behind tho Britannia. Sotno of tho
judgos say that tho accidont pro-
vuiuou mo vamyrio iroin winning;
othor,s say it was tho Britannia's
race from tho start. Tho victory of
tho Priuco of Wales has ovokod
great enthusiasm among yachtsmen.
Tho Sportsman says of tho Britan
nia: "Sho is undeniably tho bettor
boat of tho two and sho fairly thrash
ed her advorsary after sonio of tho
smartost jockeying over soon."
Tho Daily Telegraph and Sport
iug Life of London agroo that tho
Bt itannia fairly outsailed tho Val
kyrio in tho raco Thursday. Tho
Times thinks that tho two yachts
woro marvolouslv well matchod.
"Although tho Britannia is tho
longer," it says, "and thoroforo ought
to bo tho faster of tho two, there is
really little difToronco between them.
As a challenger for tho America's
cup tho Valkyrio showed herself to
bo satisfactory in tho highest do
greo. On a r0-milo course, free from
tidal influences, sho will probably
provo 15 to 20 minutes faster than
the Iverua, which is tho best trial
boat in the country." Springfield
A Letter of Gon. Armstrong:.
Kate Field in Her Washington.
Distinguishing himself by a mag
nificent charge at Gettysburg, ho
asked to be transferred to a colored
regiment and was placed in com
mand of the 5th United States color
ed volunteers. Promoted to a brigadier-generalship,
manded a colored brigade at Hilton
Head in the last days of the war and
suffered a thousand tortures from
inaction. Ho belonged to the church
militant. Ho was a born fighter and
was only happy in tho thick of the
fray. Writing to his "dear chum,"
Archibald Hopkins, who also should
ered a musket, tho irrepressible Arm
strong bewailed his fate on May 11),
I am most miserable. No disap
pointment in love, no crushing sor
row could so prostrate mo as to feel
that 1 am idling and loafing on those
sands while my old comrades and
others are struggling so nobly in
Virginia. I cauuot tell you of tho
bittoruess of soul 1 feel. I care for
nothing I am good for nothing.
My philosophy fails mo. I am fully
awaro of tho nobility of my present
position. Tho freedom of tho slave
is the hope of tho nation; but O,
that I had been there! No hope of
service hero, and I can hardly en
duro the same. Earth is hell to me.
1 would sacrifice rank, pay, ovorj
thing for a musket and a place in
tho line of tho army of tho Potomac.
Blessed bo the noblo fellows who
have fought in this last groat strug
gle. i! arowoll to all my
soldierly aspirations! I have no need
of them now. I would
rat her rind a hand-organ for tho
edification of tho mule teams of the
army of tho Potomae than review a
dress parado down hero. Tho Lamen
tations of Samuel tho unfortunate
are ended. Seo him waste on a sand
bank the goldon hours that belong
to God and country!
God only is groat, and any service of
his is good enough for mortals. Tho
fact is, I am savagely jealous! Ever
yours. Sam Armstonq.
