Tho command of tho Maro Island

Commodoro George Brown secures
command of tho Norfolk Navy Yard,
a billot ho vory much dosirod. Tho
Soorotary would havo proforrod to
havo Commodoro Brown accept
command of tho Maro Island yard,
but Commodoro Brown has had his
heart sot on going back to tho com
mand of tho Norfolk yard over sinco
ho finished his oruiso in command of
tho Pacific Squadron.
At tho iioston iavy xata uaptain
Thomas A. Solfridgo will bo suo
coodod in command by Commodoro

tho Now London naval station. Tho

A Now Horso Shoo.
Mr. Thomas Campbell, F.R.C.V.S.,
Kirkcudbrieht, Las iust broucht out
a shoo on entirely now principles,
which bids fair to revolutionise the
older methods. For many years Mr.
Campbell has made horso-shooing a
study, both practically and theore
tically, and tho present shoe is tho
outcomo of careful study, both of
tho anatomy and physiology of tho
foot. The principal points of tho
shoo are as follows: No nails are
placed posterior to tho quarter of
tho foot. Tho heol nail holo, or moro
properly speaking, the quarter holo,
is punched transversely, and is of.
sufficient length to allow the freo
lateral motion of tho nail in tho
hole for at least an eighth of an
inch. Tho shoe is bevelled from tho
quarter nail hole to tho heel from
within, outwards, and is twice as
thick outside as it is insido. Con
trary to tho principles of horso-sho-
ing as hitherto practised, this bevell
ing of tho shoe stimulates tho ex
pansion of the foot, thereby develop
ing the frog, and sinco tho concussion
is principally on the quarter nail, in
stead of on tho heel as formerly,
these shoos not only prevent con
tracted feet and groggiuess, but euro
them. Roadsters that lave been
shod on this principle are going
splendidly, and two groggy horses,
after having worn tho shoes for two
months, have been entirely cured.
The invention has been made tho
subject of a patent.
Cholera and Tobacco.
It is not superstitious belief of
physicians that induces them to
smoke right after attending a patient
suffering from infectious disease.
There are prophylactic advantages
of tobacco smoking that have been
abundantly, proved, and even as far
back as the seventeenth century
medical men ad Ued their friends to
smoke in times of epidemics. It has
been a noticeable fact that in times of
groat epidemics those working at to
bacco factories havo been almost ex
empt from the diseases. Experi
ments have now been made which
prove that the smoko of tobacco on
the micro germs of dental caries is
very beneficial. Recently experi
ments were mado with tobacco smoko
upon cholora bacilli, and according
to tho strength of the nicotine in
the cigars, wero the germs destroyed
or mado harmless. The results justi
fied the assertion that tobacco smoko
either entirely destroys tho cholera
germs, or so retards their growth as
to make them harmless. The same
is true of anthrax and pneumonia.
There are groat antiseptic qualities
in nicotine, and it is simply a ques
tion how well they will counteract
infectious diseases. All of the germs
oxporimontod with woro cultivated
on gelatine substances, but in the
human system thero would be some
difference. Nevertheless, there is
sufficient merit in the antiseptic
value of tobacco smok6 to make it
advisable for one to smoke regularly
and continually in times of epuemics.
In case of Asiatic cholera this sum
mer one could do no harm in becom
ing an inveterate smoker for tho
summer months Dr. Atkinson.
