How tho Canadian Pacific is Going
to Work.
San Francisco Bulletin.
By
advices rocoivod to-day from
our Honolulu
corrospondout, tho
following imnortnnt information re
carding the latost move of tho
Canadian Pacific Railway has boon
rocoivod:
Tho now Canadian Pacific steam
ship recently established botwoon
Vaucouvor and Australia, with Ho
nolulu as a stopping point, is begin
ning to roach aftor business in a
manner that will probably bo inte
resting to San Francisco.
On July 1st tho Wnrrimoo will ar
rivo from Australia and on hor will
bo made a shipmont of 1000 bags of
rico billed through to Portland, Or.
Tho shipmont will bo made by M.
S. Grinbaum & Co., who handle about
two-thirds of tho Hawaiian rico
crop. In an interview Mr. Grin
baum said: "This shipment is moroly
an opouing wedge of an effort to
take from ban Francisco a largo part
of hor commorco."
REDUCED FltEIGIlT RATES.
"Tho Canadian Pacific Railway
must build up business fqr its lino,
and its steamship company has mado
concessions to my firm that aro far
boyonu any t hat can bo obtained
from an Atnoricau transportation
company. My firm ships yearly to
San Francisco 125,000 bags of rico
and it has boon distributed from that
contor. Tho Canadian Pacific has
offered mo through bills of lading
to any point to .which I may dosiro
to ship at rates that aro much lower
than granted by tho Southern Pacific
Company.
"After July 1st wo will ship from
4000 to 5000 bags of rico a month on
tho Canadian steamships.
SAN FRANCISCO MERCHANTS UNDERSOLD.
"The now company does not stop
here," continued Mr. Groenbaum.
"It has mado overturns to other
firms here, and will ship to thorn
goods bought direct from tho manu
facturers, which havo heretofore been
purchased in San Francisco.
"Now, a Honolulu merchant can
go to any part of tho Unitod States,
purchase his stock and ship it home
over the Canadian Pacific at rates
that will enable him to undersell at
a profit tho merchant who does his
trading in San Francisco.
"Lumber and other building mate
rials can be shipped hero from Van
couver choapor than from San Fran
cisco, and such shipments are already
being made. But tho Canadian
Pacific has even greater expecta
tions. "It wants to handle the sugar out
put of Hawaii. At present all Ha
waiian sugar is under contract to
the Sugar Trust and must go to San
Francisco, but that contract expires
in less than five years.
"Then tho Canadian Pacific will
make a bid for tho business. If the
planters think it necessary tho rail
road compauy will see that a refi
nery is built to handle our product.
San Francisco's commerce with Ha
waii is greator than with any other
country except Great Britain, so tho
importance of this new move will be
readily appreciated by San Fran
cisco merchants."
