Mr. Bland on tho Situation.
St. Louis; July 12. Mr. Bland
said to-daj: "Of tho tariff? Tariff
reform is no longer talked of oxcept
in a bated breath. Tho East pro
poses to formulate a tariff policy on
tho lines of the original Chicago
platform, brought forward by the
Protection olomont of tho Demo
cratic party, and not in harmony
with tho substitute finally adoptod
by tho Convoutiou. They now also
proposo to ropoal tho Suorman Law
without granting tho froo coinage
part of tho platform. Tho East rodo
tno Kopublican party down to dis
aster and death, now thoy aro be
stride tho backs of tho Demo
crats. Tho East seoms to have
no use for tho Government, especi
ally tho wost and southwest portion
of it, except to wring tho last drop
of blood from tho people. Our
Eastorn friends soom to regard tho
Democratic platform and tho silver
question as a moio soo-saw; as tho
Sherman Law oud goes down, tho
froo-coinago end must go up in mid
air and remain suspended thoro. It
is plain to all now that thoy played
a mi go bunco game on tho Demo
cracy of tho South and Wost by
lustily preaching tariff reform, a
moasuro so popular hero, but at tho
same timo intending to spring upon
us, after the election, the solo issue
of silver demonetisation. If tho
representatives of tho South and
West aro truo to themselves and tho
interests of thoir constituents, this
conspiracy will not succeed. If they
aro recreant tho people will hold
them individually, if not collect
ively, responsible for thoir cringing
cowardice. Tho repeal of tho Sher
man Law outright and to substitute
nothing for it, would precipitate a
silver panic throughout tho world,
and probably cause tho universal
demonetisation, a consummation de
voutly wished by the gold party.
It seoms to mo no truo friend of sil
ver could advocate such a policy.
If we ever intend to get freo coin
age of silver in this country, we
must war for it now, right now."

Prohibition Abandoned in Kansas.
In a letter to Mr. A. J. Richard, of
Fort Scott, Attorney-General Little
intimates that tho State administra
tion has thrown Prohibition over
board, and will not use the machin
ery of tho State to enforce it. Ho
says'that several cities aro unable to
meet their taxes and aro asking that
saloons bo licensed to realise money
to meet their indebtedness. Con
cluding Attorney-General Little
says: "If this community wants
peace and harmony, soberness and
virtue, thoy must provide some
system other than tho present, for
not only will saloons run wide open,
but crime of every conceivable na
ture will become rampant."
"Ono of my customors came in to
day and asked me for tho best cough

and he did not ask to see any other.
I have uover yet sold a medicine
