HOW AMERICANS FIGHT FIRE.
A Kansas Oity Company Give- tho
English Somo Fointora.
Chiof Goorgo C. Ilnlo and nino
rnon from tho Kansas City Firo
Dopartmont, arrived at Now York
July 9 from Glasgow on tho Anchor
Lino stoamor Finuossia. Thoy soiled
from Now York lato in May to at
tend tho iuturnationnl congress of
fii onion in London, taking with thorn
a Halo watortowur and a span of firo
horses, which Chief Hnlo brought
from tho Kansas City Dopartmont
for uso in competition at tho con
gross. Uhiof Halo and his moii hooked
up thoir horses and got out of. thoir
temporary firohousu in oight and a
half seconds. Tho British team oc
cupied more than a minute in tho
sumo work, tho Froneh threo min
utes and tho Germans nearly ton.
Tho Kansas City mou loaped from
an oighty-lio-foot tower into tho
lifo nets spiead bolow and carried
one another down ladders with a
rapidity which startled all who saw
them. Sevoral members of Chiof
Halo's team were circus acrobats be
foro thoy becamo liiomeu. As thoy
wore tho only American representa
tives at tho congress tho Europoans
soon evinced groat respect for tho
fire-fighting methods of tho western
world. Tho team gavo exhibitions
in Edinburgh and Glasgow, and the
Scotch, liko tho English, becamo
enthusiastic over tho performances.
D. W. Coquillott, special agent of
tho Department of Agriculture at
Los Angeles, says in his last pub
lished loporl (just received) to Chiof
Entomologist K;loy, with reference
to tho condition of the last importa
tion of beneficial insects from Aus
tralia: "At tho present writing two of tho
most important of the imported
species, tho Orcus auitralasiae and
Orai? ehulybeus, are breeding in two
localities in this city, as well as in
an olive grove in Santa Barbaia
county, and tho fonnor species is
also breeding in Alameda county.
While they do not increase with
sufficient rapidity to gie us tho as
surance that they will bo able to
practically free all of the trees in
this State of the different kinds of
scale insects that infest them, still
thoy will undoubtedly prove valu
able allies in keeping these scale in
sects in check.
"iVoi'i'ur kabelei is also firmly es
tablished lieio. T linvn it. hnuwlinrr
in my office at tho present writing,
aud have seut a few colonies to dif-
l rorout localities in tho State. Tho
1 Horticultural Commissioner of this
count-, John Scott, also has colo
nies of this insect bleeding in his
i office, anil has seut out colonies in
place of the Vtdul.'acanlinalis. While
, this last-named insect has offectu
ally kept in check tho destructive
' lluted or cottony-cushion scale
(Iccrya )urchusi), still of course thoro
is abundant room for this second
species to aid in this commondablo
1 work. Being much smaller than
tho Vedalia aud not passing through
I its changes any more rapidly, it is
very doubtful whethor tho Novius
could have accomplished tho same
work in tho same time that tho Vo
daha did in California.
"It is very probable that four
other kinds of beneficial insects, the
Lcis conformis, Alexia fromata, tho
reddish-yellow ladybiid with six
olytral black spots-, and the small
black one with two largo olytral red
spots, are also established here, but
these wore received in such small
numbers that some little time must
olapso bofoio thoy will have multi
plied sufficiently to bo mot with ex
cept after a long and careful search
' for them. It is also possiblo that
tho Cryptohenius and two or threo
species of Scymnids, as well as tho
i Thalpochtlres, may yot bo found to
i have gained a loothold here, but
: this can bo determined only after
the lapse of soioral mouths, or per
haps ovon longer than this."
Last fall I was taken with a kind
of summer complaint, accompanied
with a woudcrlul diarrhoea. Soon
after my wife's sister, who lives with
us, was taken in the samo way. Wo
used almost everything without
benefit. Then I said, lot us try
Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera and
Diarrhoea Remedy, which o did,
and that cured us right away. I
think much of it, as it did for mo
what it was recommended to do.
