Olalme of Labor.
Taking into uonsidorntion past
evonts of which wo all lmvo a por
sonal Uiiowlotl,'o, wo can arrive at,
no other conclttbion thau that wo
have not, as working inon, had a
fair sharo of representation, oithor
on local or gonoral governing bodies.
Tho system has boon bad and cor
rupt in regard to t ho elections which
have taken place- in tho past. Quali
fications and restrictions havo boon
of such n nnluro that it was a moral
impossibility for ordinary working
men to havo any part or lot in tho
niattor. Onlv to ho mud as tools in
tho hands of designing capitalists
who had vested intorosts at stake,
and would sparo neither timo nor
oxponso to attain tho objocts which
tltoy havo had in view such objects
being to hold and maintain a despo
tic influence ovor tho working
elassos, so as to bo able to keep us iu
a state ol porlect subjection, know
ing that thorein lay tho safety of
their position as unchallougod dic
tators, dospots and tyrannical op
pressors. But gradually, of late
jears, this stato of things has boon
altering. Chiefly owing to com
pulsory education, which lias beon
tho means of showing the working
classes our true position, and our
real requirements, wo havo also dis
covered that, as working men, wo
play no meau and unimportant part
in establishing and maintaining tho
welfare of tho country, and, knowing
this, wo aro beginning to demand
that wo shall havo a voice and a vote
iu all matters affecting our intorosts,
and we aro cletirly ablo to uudor-
stauu in what direction our interests
lie, and how thoy aro affected.
The greater tho development of
this knowledge, tho greater will bo
tho demands for fairer and nioro
proportionate representation. Wo
can easil' seo how wo havo boon
gulled by our so-called representa
tives by their flower' speeches and
fine promises at tho times of elec
tion, when thoy havo been seeking
our suffrage, but no sooner havo
thoy beon returned and got snugly
ensconced in their seats than thoy
havo forgot that thoy over mado any
promises at all, auu tho very mon
who havo chiefly contributed in
sending them by doing tho dirty
work for them, havo been treated
with utter contempt, or as though
thoy had no osisteuco at all.
Such havo been our representa
tives or, T should say, misropreson
tatives. And it is our intention to
havo this forinor stato of things
lint tho question mav reasonably
bo asked, how aro you going to alter
it? 1 havo said it before, and I shall
say it again. By organization! Yesl
Organization, that is tho plant, of
liberty, which has proved able to
grow evorywhoro else in tho world,
so why should it not be ablo to grow
in Hawaii? The Bulletin of August
Stli hail a nolo to this effect: "An
other encyclical from tho Popo to
all rulers in Christendom is about to
lie issued. It urges tho rights of
labor and asserts that religion is tho
only euro for socialism." This is
auother authentic verdict by which
the claims of labor aro endorsed,
proving tho possibility for Chris
tendom to walk hand iu hand with
freedom and tradesuuionism.
Therefore, I cannot say it too
often, tho present time calls for tho
unification of labor, nioro thau any
timo before. Wo aro now living
under a preliminary form of govern
ment, which sooner or later shall
havo to givo way to a permanent.
And oithor we aro going to havo tho
old, of all parties' down-trampled
Constitution restituted with perhaps
some alteration, or wo aro going to
havo a now one issued. It is, in any
case, not alono our right but also
our duty to stand by and watch our
interests. So that wo in the future
shall bo ablo to send men of our
own order, in tolerable proportion,
to be our representatives both in
local and general governing bodies,
where wo shall bo ablo to got at tho
root of tho evils.
These men will havo a practical
knowledge of our true position, and
also of our real requirements. Such
men know where tho shoo pinches
on account of their practical exper
ience, and when tnoy expound their
views it cannot fail to havo tho de
sired effect, because those who listen
to thorn, will know that their argu
ments aro based on stern practical
facts, and not on theory as in times
It will bo an entirely now depart
ure. Tho men will lie sent by tho
popular voto of tho people, to carry
tlio pledges they have given, aud tho
instructions they havo received, into
effect, and not to act as dummies in
their places for tho purpose of
making upn- representative gathor-
Givo mo liberty or death! wore
tho words I heard a prominent
sjieakor sav a few days ago. Yes,
givo mo liberty. But 1 do not
think that tho parly of tho
first part is very much inclined
to do such a tiling. would sooner
beliovo it inclined to givo mo tho
latter. No! If wo want liborly wo
shall have to stand up aud claim it,
aim ii neces.sary lorco our claim
through, 1 think 1 havo already
stated hiifiiciont to cause rational
thinking men to arrivo at tho con
clusion that, as workingnien, wo aro
far too heavily handicapped, and
tlio boonor wo aro determined to
hlialto off this yoke and assort our
rights tho better it will be for us in
evory respect, and there is no neces
sity why wo should wait any longer
before making a start.
Ju conclusion 1 would urge upon
all to calmly and carefully compiler
this matter, and not confine tho de
cision which you may arrivo at within
your own breasts, but let tho rest of
your fellow men whom you comu in
contact with know (lie opinions
which you havo formed, aud urge
upon them to do tlio same as you
have done Unit is, think tho niattor
out for thouibolvo.s; aud if you do
this more good will be done iu that
direct ion thau you are aware of.
