LATE ITEMS FROM ALASKA.
Diacovory of a Volcano Hawaiian
Stoatnor Alexander Again.
Lnto Snnd Point. Alaska, dos
lnteliuH contnin tho following items:
The location of tho now volcano
which start lod tho inhabitants of tho
country in tho vicinity of Unga last
year by n stiddon urtiption of lire and
Iishos, covering the country andevon
tho docks of vessels 100 miles away,
i no longer a question of doubt. On
her last cntio to tho eastward tho
revenue cutter Hush passed along
the Alaskau peninsula during excep
tionally clear weather. When about
lifteon miles east bv north from
Cape St. John the olllcerh "on board
discovered a volcano neier before
noted in an active state of eruption,
and bearing northwest by north half
north from tho ship.
It was in the centre of a very high
range of snow-covered mountains,
and the crater showed very plainly
as a black niaos against tho whito
background, and was probably some
six or eight acres in area. Huge
clouds of dense vapor, alternated by
black volumes of smoke, were pour
ing out and contiuued visiblo for
peroral hours from tho Hush's deck.
By careful bearings tho approxi
mate position of the now volcano
was fixed in latitude 50 dog. 25 min.
north, longitude 159 dog. 30 mm.
west.
The sohoonor G. K. Whito, ono of
tho sealing fleet which chose tho
Japanese side of the ocean to work
in this season, reached Landman
harbor last week on her way home.
She has only 215 skins and her mas
ter reports nearly all of tho vessels
as doing very poorly on that side.
The Allio Alger of Portland has
1250 and tho Alexander, which, it
will be remembered, sailed from San
Francisco early in tho year under
the Hawaiian Hag, has 1000 skins as
the total oi lier season's worn so
far.
The mysterious nature of the Alex
ander's voyage is still matter for dis
cussion among the scalers, many of
whom think that Captain McLean,
who has already boon once in the
clutches of the" Russians for sealing
too close to the Copper islands, is
preparing to have his revenge and
intends to raid the rookeries or even
to capture thn annual catch of seals
made by the ItiiaMau company in
Copper islands when the most pro
pitious time arm os1.
Tho settlors laugh at t ho idea that
a vessel fitted out as tho Alexander
is, at groat expense, and costing at
least 2500 a month to run, is simply
hunting seals like the smaller ves
sels. Othors seem to think that McLean
has located a newly found rookery
somewhere on the Asiatic coast aud
proposes to go there when tho seals
are most plentiful and get a cargo
uudistuibed. It is known that
among the articles lunnslieu tuo
osol before leaving San Francisco
were a number of seal clubs, which
are only used for killing seal on
shore, and this fact gives color to
the surmises of tho last-named class
of speculators as to the probable
destination of the Alexander.
Meanwhile Captain McLean, while
awaiting the culmination of his plan
of campaign, is sealing just tho same
as any of them, but this is probably
to disarm suspicion aud leave him
more freedom to work ''alone aud
unobserved."
