PACIFIC BANK AFFA1US.
Investigation of tlio nUnirs of tlio
Pucific Bank of San Francisco re
veals a list of overilvaftH amounting
to nearly a million dollars.
The troubles of tlio hank begau as
far back as 1800, nlthotij'li no spe
cial fault was fount! by the Commis
sioners until tlio latter paitof 181)1.
11. H. McDonald was then informed
by tho commission that hi9 bank
was insolvent. With tears in his
vyos ho said ho as a rich man and
would throw his fortuno into tlio
bank in lion of the objectionable as
sets, McDonald, hovoor, novor
kept his promiso.
The commission has, it seems, no
powortodo anjtlnng further than
to report tho affairs of a batik, when
found vroti, to the Attornoy-Gon-oral.
In this ease it reported to tho
Attorney-General icpeatedly sinco
1891, but that ollloial took no ac
tion. At piesetit a case is ponding
in tho courts, to settle a conflict of
authority botween the Sheriff and
the Bank Coinnif-ion, and until it is
decided nothing can bo done toward
settling tho whole l)tiiuos up.
It is rumored that through Dr. R.
H. McDonald, tn'ii-morot tlio Homo
of tho Inebriate-. .20,000 bolouging
to that institution wa-. swallowed up
in tho Pacific Bank failure. Dr. Mc
Donald was also treasurer of tho
Society for tho Prevention of Cruel
ty to Children, and that organiza
I tion is out S(5(i72 by the failure.
ClIOLUtA IN CUHOI'C.
Thus far tho United Statos has I
escaped a visitation of Asiatic eho-
lera this year, but it is duo not to I
me non-oxi-ionco ol tne nreauiui
diseaso in Europe, but to tho pre
cautions taken by this country and
the enforcement of a strict quaran
tine. Ollicial returns of tho cholera
in Russia show a marked increase in
tho ravages of the malady in those
parts of the empire where" it is epi
demic. From .7 uly 9th to the 22d
thore wore in Podolia 1165 cases and
850 deaths,, as against 4-19 cases and
ll-J itoatlis during the previous
week. In Moscow, from July 16th
to tho 22d, there woio 72 casos and
21 deaths. There are nine or tou of
the Russian provinces or statos in
which choleta exists in an epidemic
form, and in some of them it appears
to be particularly virulent. Wo
must not rola our watchfulness in
the least degree if we desire immun
ity from tho terrible disease. 5. F.

Tho Star and Native Opinion.
The editor of tho falling Star is
either a conceited fool or a man who
had rather lie than toll the truth.
In his night-shade of August 17 lie
warbles thus: "A great deal is said
in tho royalist papers about what
the natives want, what tho natives
demand, and of tho emotion with
which the nathei legard the politi-
cal status of this group. In tho mean-
I time those natives themselves, by
i whom is implied the pure Hawaiian
strain, have little or nothing to say
on tho subject, cither in tho prass,
on tho rostrum or along tho curb
stone." The above clearly shows
the stranger editor to bo deep in tho
daik as regards the thoughts of na
tives on the subject of robbiug them
of their country. The Star man will
now perhaps understand the appar
ent docility and quietness of the na
tives during tho last hix months.
They have often been told by tho
Queen and by their host of fnouds
throughout the Hands, and also by
Minister Blount himself, to keep
perfectly quiet and cause no distur
bance whatever, as Uncle Sam was
bound to do them justice. The Star
scribbler may now learn why tho
natives wore so quiet when tho
American flag was lowored from tho
goyornment house. If the Star man
thinks for one moment that the na
tives are indifferent as tegards the
future of their country, just lot him
have patience a lit tlo longer, uutil
Undo Sam is read to undo the
damnable wrong done to this coun
try by the hated Stevens, and res
tores tho Queen where she belongs
when ho will hear such a spontane
ous outburst of feeling straight from
the throats and hearts of those
silent natives, as ho never heard be
fore, nor will he forget, the longest
day he lives. Wo aro well awaro
that the Star man scribblos sonsa
tioual twaddle for money--truth
and honor in his liue aro "nix." Tho
Sun conespondouco quoted in tho
Star sounds too much like tho wail
ings o! that paporto take any notieo
of. Tho Star is fast passing into
Chinese stores for wrapping paper,
it is only incidentally that it is road
at all. Annotation oven among tho
formerly most enthusiastic is fast
dying out, it is dying parallel with
tho Star. Ociijiuluee.
