Continued from hi Pngc.)
potilirm which is fast wiping out of
oxistotico tho outiro savings, and lins
completely dostroyod tho profit ablo
noss of tho businesses, of tho farm
ers and yeotnou of England; and ho
lias siiowii how vitally it concerns
thu worhiugmon of Groat Britain
that tho Government they roly upon
should do its best to bring about
somo international agreement for a
sottlemont of this question, which,
in thu opinion of the great authori
ties quoted, can bu settled in no other
way and by no other means than by
a rolurn to tho uso by tho great
trailing nations of a currency system
established on that basis which car
ried nil tho "good money" that over
was from the dawn of history to I ho
financially fateful year 187J1.
Sir Guilford Molesworth, K. C. I.
E., goes further, and, in his romark
ablo and oxhaustivo essay, shows
that tho monotary question boforo
the world at this moment is of a
social and political importaneo be
yond anything in the platforms of
any political parly in England, lu
dia, or tho United States. In brief,
this question, whether men choose
to stylo it tho "depreciation of sil
ver, or tho "appreciation of gold,"
cannot safely bo allowed to drift
much longor. Its coutinued exist
ence is the rock of stumbling in tho
path of England's manufacturing
supremacy; tho method of its dotor
mination involves the revival or final
extinction of farming in this coun
try. Tho re-ostablishmout of the
broad, two-metal basis for tho
world's money is tho only possible
means for an equitable readjustment
of tho utterly dislocated relations
between labor and capital. Viewed
from tho standpoint of the creditor
and bondholder, those who have tho
best means of judging see clearly
that unless wo can manage to back
out of this Haass'! of monometallism
wo shall soon bo within measurable
distance of an absolute engorgement
of tho whole of the banks and finan
cial institutions with inconvertible
securities. National bankruptcy im
pends over India, Australia, Italy,
Spain, aud Portugal, the utter fiuau
cial enslavement of Germany aud
Austro-Huugary is already an ac
complished fact, and what Russia,
already seemingly at the end of her
legitimate resources, may do next it
is hard to predict; but we may safely
anticipate that she will take no
thought for Western Europe, seeing
to what depths of meanui'ss aud in
justice she has already stooped in
her hate aud defiance of that nation
and class who, of all tho world, are
most vitally interested m tho out
come of this groat question, "Ou
what shall tho future money of the
world bo based, and our mutual ex
changes proceed?" Financial Xcivx.

Gilt-Edged Disaster.
During tho flood last Sunday the
Observer ollico happened to bo in
tho path that tho self-willed water
had chosen to take. It came down
the mountain side back of the office,
carrying with it largo chunks of tho
mountain, that it scattered over the
floor to a depth of about eight
inches. When tho sloppy flood had
gone on its march to tho sea, the
chunks of mountain wore loft with
us. The nest day a cleau-up was
made, and it was found that enough
gold had washed in with tho sand
and sottled in tho cracks of the
lloor, that acted in ripples in a sluice
box, to pay for tho damage done the
