was shipping largo quantities of
opiutii, pt'arls, inooustono.s and other
precious sionoa to Vancouver,
wlionco, tho duty having beon paid
ou parts of thu Huipniouts to tho
Canadian Government, tlio goods
wore shippud to paints along tho
Canadian border, and afterward
smuggled across tho lino. Tho Gov
ernment made every effort to cap
ture tho operators, but without bue
cesss. A now plan was adopted. A de
tective was sout to Honolulu. Ho
there learued that tho goods wore
shipped at Hongkong. Ho went
there and placed -a privatn mark up
on all tho cases while they lay in the
warehouso before shipment. The
result was that two months ago one
of those turned up at Now York in
tho possession of a largo druggist,
who was shipping it to St. Louis.
The goods wore .seized and tracod to
Torouto, but as yet tho authorities
have not been able to find tho man
at this end who bhipped them.
Why tho smugglers did not soud
tho goods direct to Vancouver is ex
plained by tho fact that Hawaii not
being a producor of opium and
precious stones, packages from there
were not so liable to bo open to sus

There is onethiii,' which a healthy
boy loves almost as well as he loves
to ho busy, and that is to make a
noise and thrust his identity upon
others. Now tho hih-tide mark of
boiuy busy, making a noise, and pes

newsboy. The newsboy is a clamor
ous, ubiquitous sprite, untidy, nim
ble, cunning, coming always "with a
halo of ringing din around him. Ho
buys three papers for live cents and
sells them lor live cents apiece. So
every three sales that ho consum
mates nets to his pocket a wholo
dime. He is found stationed along
the sidewalks and in the middle of
the streets. With an amaziiif? sunn
froid ho risks his neck aud bonos in
getting aboard of moving ears aud
in dropping off tho clanging dum

face of passenger or pedestriau, and
often makes a sale from sheer force
of personal magnetism. Elodie Ho
