Tho Match Boy.
Thoro is a Iribo of philosophers in
sninll broochos whoso avocation takos
thorn to tho quiet st roots, whoro tho
pooplo livo in uglv Iioufos with bay
wmilows that look out on oobblo
stones and pavements. Thuso aro
tho boj's who aro not nbtrusive, not
fond of noiso aud crowds, and boys
with n vory small eapital to invest.
A match boy's complete stock in
trade consists of four doen bunches
of matches swung over his shoulders
in a calico bag, a good pair of legs
to pack him, and a solemn air of un
j concern as to tho general wagging
of tho world. His four dozen bunches
cost hi in twouty-fivo cents, and when
ho retails thorn at four bunchos for
livo cents, ho nols on his invest innnt.
i
thirty-livo cents. There's many a
milo, though, to bo trudged before
that big sum is cleared. Their busi
ness takos them toward tho kitchen
whoro nickels aro scarco, not out
on the thoroughfares whoro looso
chango Hows freo.
One day I mot ouo of thoso small
gentry who had sold only livo cents
worth of matches in four whole days
of marching. Thoro was a mcoknoss
in his habit of conduct which gavo
an extra valuo to his matches. To
hear him laugh and see him tako his
nickel would mako one dosiro to buy
his matches all day long, just liko
tho man who dospisod trade and
whoso dream of opuleneo and wealth
was to go along tho wharves aud flip
dimes into tho water, becauso ho got
nothing in return for them. This
mild mannered child, in an amazing
way, discussed tho fluctuations of
tho match market. And as ho faced
about to ring tho boll of a "no ped
dlers" bo-signod house, ho sapiontly
remarked that "matches Would go
up next year." Elodie Hogan, in
September Caliornian.

American Finances.
It is tho logic of evonts that a sin
gle gold standard caunot bo main
tained for any great length of time
without causing depression of values
and a financial crisis, for money is
only valuable, whether dear or cheap,
when it can bo used in somo form of
enterprise. Tho borrowers of money
aro tho men who do something, who
build up aud sustain tho wealth of
the world. They are tho creators;
aud when tuonoy becomes too valua
ble to borrow, then commodities will
be too cheap to create, because no
margin of profit will be left to the
producer, and dull times will be in
evitable. It cannot bo denied that
a chango in tho financial system of a
country is dangerous, becauso any
change affects tho value of property,
aud therefore, stability is more need
ed than improvement. No uatiou is
groat enough to iniposo its own
monotary system on tho rest of the
world, uules it is to tho interest of
tho rest of the world to adopt it.
Aud a free people will not willingly
adopt a monetary system which
makes property less valuable and the
masses of its people poorer. Eng
land has done this, for it is admitted
by English statesmen that within
twenty years, all property in Eng
land has decreased in valuo fully
thirty percent, its agriculture is in
decay, its laboring pooplo aro migrat
ing in vast numbers to romoto colo
nies or to tho United States, its
manufacturing interests are not pros
pering, and while its rich pooplo
have more gold, its poor people have
none, and thoy can earn none. In
deed, thoro is no encouragement for
prosperous America to swap finan
cial systems with England. Morris
31. Estec in Stptember Califomian.
