Land for Hawaiians.
EDiTort Bulletin:
Tho Kovoroud W. B. Oloson who
left, horo on a lecturing tour in tho
interosta of tho Annexation Club ap
pears from latest accounts to bo in
dustriously preaching tho doctrines
of tho P. G. and tho gospel accord
ing to tho most improved vorsiou of
his Ifovoroud Brothers Bishop and
Iosopa. At latest advices ho was
posing as tho friond of tho landless
Hawaiian, a part of his thoory being
to givo oach of them a pieco of
Crown Lauds.
Now this thoughtfulness for tho
landless uativo is good as far as it
goos. It helps also to draw atten
tion to tho laud question and land
monopoly iu general, which it may
bo here remarked fitrikos at the root
of individual and national prospe
rity. It is not easy to speak of
monopoly in this country without
treading on some weil-meauing
man's toes who would resent being
classed a monopolist ; but tho fact
is plain, that tho dovolopmont of
our social organism has proved fav
orable to tho strangor who landed
horo endowed with an abnormal
bump of acquisitiveness, a stomach
fermenting with earth-hunger, a
pious smirk and a neat string of
heavenly sentences which supposes
poi and lish being supplied by an
gols, and golden harps taking tho
place of the commonplace taro
patch fiddle.
Iu the early settlement of New
Zealand, before the mission socie
ties or the government realised the
danger to tho native people of mis
sionary and other foreigners' earth
hunger, a considerable acreage of
laud was deeded by native chiefs
for church and school purposes as
well as private ownership. Tho
British Government found it neces
sary, in order to prevent the native
from becoming a landless stranger
iu his own country, to prevent the
further alienation of native land,
which is the law also in all Pacific
Island Territory under British rule
or protection.
This is a subject on which it is
safe to say Mr. Oleson never wasted
any breath during his residence in
Hawaii. He always found timo, it
is true, to dabble in politics, but his
efforts were ever iu tho direction of
helping to build up monopoly. Tho
present editor of tho Advertiser was
never more felicitous than when
pen-painting tho "political parson"
as a syeophaut iu 1S(J0.
Mr. Oleson has seen a large por
tion of the Crown Laiids pass into
private lesseohip and', knowing what
it meant for thoso who were living
on the royal domain, maintained a
cowardly silence which deprives
him of any claim to pose as the
friend of tho Hawaiian. Tho native
on Crown Land directly under the
King was a tribal dopeudaut of the
King; under the transfer of lessee
ship ho became a chattel who had
ceded all but his maintenance to his
now master, or at the best a serf
rendering to his now lord, the les
see, three days of unpaid labor per
week, maintaining himself on tho
product of tho rest.
