which ho was accredited. Mr. Ole

Hawaii, anil lie wroto what ho seems
to mo a very sensible letter, as you
will see here:
Mil. 12m roi 1 do not believe that the

my ili'paituie to my native l.md. In my
own couiitij I should be opposed to the
annexation of these islands, believing in
the Atneiiciin nou colonial policy. And
other representation of my vicwb is a

Mil. OLEWN IIAb CUAXDED 111b illNJ).
Mr. Olo&oii is now in this country,
going about as an earnest advocate
of annexation, being in tho pa, Ho
nolulu people bay, of the Annexation
Club, i do not think the matter of
much importance. Mr. Olosou has
chaugud his mind, lint ever3-body
has a right to change kis mind.
Beiug a clergyman and an instructor
of youth, from whom a degree of
consistency of opinion is reasonably
expected, Mr. Oleson would, of
cuurse, have dono wiaoly if when ho
began his career as an advocate of
annexation he had frank!- read to
his American audiences this forcible
anti-annexation letter of his and ex
plained why the excellent reasons
he theie gave against annexation
now seem to liilu fallacious or of no
force.
Mr. Olesou's case is not like that
of Mr. Thur&toji, the preseut Minis
ter of the Provisional Government
at Washington. Mi. Thurston has
been eminent in Hawaiian politics
for a number of years; has served in
tho Legislature and been a mouibor
of tho Cabinet under tho monarchy
which his grandparents, with tho
other missionary fathers, estab
lished. On October 17, 1B02, just
throe mouths before Minister' .-ite-vons
brought on the revolution, Mr.
Thurston was a prominent member
of the Hawaiian Legislature and in
tho opposition, ihoro wore then
already rumors of plotting to pro
euro annexation, and the names of
Mr. Thurston and friends and poli
tical allies ol bin wore by these pub
lic rumors connected with sucli an
intention or project. Mr. Thurston
and his friendo tlesired to upset the
thou Cabinet, with tho hope of them
selves "comiug in," and thoy found
that the alaim among the native
people, as woll as among whites,
about auiiRinlioii schemes stood iu
their way. So Air. Tliuiston, on tho
17th of October, just throe months
befoio the annexationist resolution,
got up iu the Legislature and said,
asrupoited iu the Honolulu papers
of that time:
Mil TIIUUHroN s OCIOllUll bl'I'.KUJI.
