Tho "Ohlldron'a" Mothod.
Tho "missionary children" are
niireadiiiK Ihumsvlvus just now bo
foro tlio Aniorican iiublic. Thoy ar
proving worthy of thoir previous
ruuord at liomu. B "homo" I ruoau
Hawaii, for tho Advertiser wants the
dull public not to forgot that thoso
favored ones can also claim tho birth
place of thoir fathers as their homo.
Theu there is thoir "heavenly home,"
whore the weary saint who has spout
a busy life foreclosing mortgages
and engineering monopolies and
playing beggar-my-uoighbor gou-orallj-,
will be rewarded with a pa
tent rocker in a sky-mansion and a
golden harp, and have au abundance
of iced punch aud delicacies such as
Dives can allbrd to buy, and Lazarus
long for. 1 may say that theory and
practice lead to tho conclusion that
tho characters in tho old parable are
placed all wrong. Dives must be ou
top, aud no aborigines iu tlte way.
But this is a digression.
1 started out to note the record
that the missionary children aud
their pupils aud coadjutors are
making for themselves abroad. How
the end justifies tho means is neatly
illustrated in tho paragraph from
tho S. F. Chronicle of the 22d iust.,
quoted iu yesterday's Bulletin,
wherein tho Queen Dowager Kapio
laui is represented as favoring an
nexation. It is not likely that the
individual who invented this lie will
ever come forward publicly to claim
it, and as there are about a score or
more of church members and "rover
ends" travelling iu the States sow
ing such falsehoods by the hundred,
the individual authorship matters
little; it was probably just given to
a gullible congregational audience
from a pulpit, aud sown as a good
"grain of mustard seed" in printer's
ink, and will be read by multitudes
who will novor see tho contradiction.
Tho missionary author has got a
mouth'b start for the lio anyhow.
Mr. Thurston has for a moment
loft his show to cross swords with
Sprockets at Washington. Tho
complaint that the Sugar King do
inandea of tho Provisional Govern
ment money which he loaned to the
"royalist" government will certainly
not count for much when Spreckeis
givos his reason why. On the con
trary, tho reply, such as Col. Spreck
eis gave here, will prove a boom
erang. It will strike back badly.
Tho next lie quoted from Thurs
ton in the Chronicle, "that soldiers
wero placed in charge of tho govern
ment L)Uimiu to prvuut bprcjliola
and other roj'alistb from carrying
out thoir repeated threat of restor
ing the ox-(juoon by force," will con
vince the reader that the Provisional
Government enjoys tho blessing of
a lively opposition, aud is thereby
seen to be unpopular. We are fur
ther told that Thurston cites "the
continued peace and the surplus iu
tho treasury to show the success of
tho now government." To all of
which Air. Spreckeis can give replies
which will show up Showman Thurs
ton iu his true colors.
Thurston declares "that planters
aluiobt without exception prefer to
tako their chances without contract
coolie labor rather than bear the
misgovern mout of tho past." Straugo
that otcry proposition lookiug to
annexation has a proviso for import
ing coutiact coolies which tho mis
sionary planter knew to tie so re
pugnant to American sentiment as
to render annexation under it au
luurstou will discover that the
American public- will bo well in-
formed as to "the government of the
past," what it was, aud who were the
actors in it. Mr. Blount's report
was at latest dates open to the in
spection of Senators. It will be
published to the world after the de
cision of the President of the United
States is made known aud carried
out here. In the meantime Senators
are bound by thoir rulos to secrecy
aud it is safe to say that, iu the face
of the evidence before them, not one
would be found to advocate the
steal inaugurated by Stevens aud
his missionary brethren.
Whuu the annexationists compare
tho situation here with Alaska, Tex
as, Florida, Oregon, and California,
they display au ignoranco as to facts.
Those places were transferred by
bonafido holders, there was no occa
sion for a vote in auy case, as there
wero no objectors looming up in
front of tho transfer, tho owuers
alone wero consulted. The "Abori
gines" (vide Smith) of thoso State,
had not enjoyed au independent
soeruignty for ages -enjoying a
place iu the family of nations, aud
being iu friendly treaty relations
with the nation in whose name it is
proposed to o licet the steal.
Auothor point tho Blathorbkites
scribbling for tho missionary pirates
caiefully coucoal is, that the provi
sional party are not conquerors iu
any souse. Thoy outored into pow
er under a compact, a compromise,
for a time recognising tho co-ordinate
existence of tho Queen by pro
mising to pay her balary aud allow
her a guard, and making other terms
with her, which are now so much
dishonored paper. Tho Queeu's pro
test wait duly received aud acknowl
edged and "is as good as auy docu
ment advanced by tho 1. G., and
under it the Queen is untitled to be
hoard by the power to whom she
appeals lor redress.
it is safe to say that no plebiscite
will be taken, as none will be needed
lotthow Ute numerical strength of the
party of annexation. It would be
fortunate for the people if the mis
sionary could lo suddenly seued
with Htichau extra tit of lying when
Minister Willis arrived, as to insist
dnntinwil on 4h Pngt.)
