UNION SAILORS NOT WANTED.
Ooodall, Perkins & Co. Will Ship
Crews Whore They Please.
Goodall, Perkins & Co. 3'esterday
notified the Sailors' Union that they
had done with that organization for
good aud all and iu future will ship
thoir own crews on all coasting
steamers connected with the com
pany. That such a course would be
pursued was slated in yesterday's
Chronicle. Tlio future action of the
company was carefully laid down by
Captain J. H. Bennett, the superin
tendent of the compauy, whoso
office is on Broadway wharf.
"In the past we have been getting
orews from the Sailors' Uuiou," said
the superintendent; "but this is en
tirely done away with from to-day.
Some time ago we notified tho uuiou
that uo overtime would be paid.
Now we go further and say that we
will ship whom we please aud will
no moro be dictated to by tho union
as to wages, time or anything else.
'"There are two principal reasons
that led up to tho change. The first
is that the Sailors' Union has a rule
that sailors liiunt. ship iu rotation,
whether competent or not. The
second reason is that we want to
employ a number of union men who'
nave families and who, under the
rule, are forced to lay idle. Most of
these moii. have lately cut loose from
the uuiou. There is uo discriminate
against either union or nou-miiou
men, but a desire to assert our in
dependence." The withdrawing of the support
of this big shipping linn is a sad
blow to the union. Tlio members of
the organization are getting nioie
thoroughly demoralized every day.
The prospect is that the Sailors'
Union of tho Pacific will soon coime
to exist. S. F. Chronicle.
Social and Dance.
Tho Sons of St. George will have
a social and dance at K. of P. hall
next Monday evening. Tickets to
admit lady and gentleman, $1.(10, for
sale at Golden Rule Bazaar aud Ash
worth's barber shop.
