NOW FOR A CUBE.
A Scientific Theory of tho Causo of
Seasickness.
They aro tho most familiar things
which in our scionco bocomo the
straugust. Not to know whore you
are when seasick, still leBs where
your mind is, is common enough.
Our next experiment will trace our
power to know whore sounds aro, to
the same origin as seasickness.
Sickness starts in the oar. In its
cavitjvare throe small tubes, each
bent in a circle, and filled with fluid.
The three sit at right angles to each
other, like tho threu sides at tho cor
ner ot a room or a box. ljoubo
queutiy, in whatever directioii tho
head is moved, tho fluid in some one
of the tubes is given a circular mo
tion. Hanging out into the tubes,
from their sides, aro hairs or cilia,
which connect with norvo cells and
libros that branch oil from tho audi
tory nerve. When tho head move?
tho fluid moves, the hairs move, the
cells aro "fired off," a nervous cur
rent is sent up to tho brain, and a
feeling of tho head's peculiar motion
is consequent.
As for seasickness: this nerve cur
rout, on its way to the brain, at one
uoint runs besido tho spot or "cen
tre" where tho norvo governing tho
htomach has its origin. When the
rocking of tho head is abnormally
violent and prolonged, tho stimulus
is so great that the current leaks
over into this adjoining "coutre," and
so excites tho nerve running to the
stomach as to causo wretchedness
and retching. Deaf mutes, whose
oar "canals" aro affected, are never
seasick.
But normally tho amount of oar
foolimr whioh wo uot bv reason of
moving our head in a particular
direction coinos in a curious way to
bo a measure of tho direction of
sound. The toolings we get from our
skin and muscles in turning the head
play a similar rolo. Wo turn our ear
to catch a sound. Wo do this so
frequently for every poiut, that iu
time wo learn to judge the direction
of tho sound by tho way wo would
have to turn tho head iu order to
hear tho sound best. Thereafter we
do not have to turn the head to get
the direction, for wo now remember
the propor feeling aiui kuow it. lnis
memory of tho old feeling is our
idea of tho present direction. If we
never moved our heads we never
could have any such notion of the
location of sounds as at present
perhaps none whatever. From the
