ANARCHY IN ALASKA.
An American Missionary's Appeal
Before Being Murdorod.
Kev. R. W. Wallace, pastor of the
United Congregational Church of
Newport, R. L, was an intimate
friend of the Hu.H. R.Thornton,
the missionary who was recently
murdered at Capo Prince of Wales,
Alaska, and ho lately received the
followiug letter brought by the
widow of the deceased:
U.i pk Phinck or Wales, Alaskv,
August 17, 185KM
Dkau Mil Wallace:
Mv uloasant recollections of your
politeness encourage me to ask the
help of your iullueuce in our hour
of greatest neod. Wo aro in great
peril here. The life of uiy late col
league was twice threatened. Mj
wife and 1 were shot at by a drunk
en native, and another olFored to
stab us. The schoolhouso has boon
broken into seven times this year.
The killing of thirteen natives by
whalers is the cause of our troubles.
Cautain M. A. Healy, of United
States cutter Boar, the only ollicer
of law in this section, refuses to pro
tect us and banish the offenders.
Law is necessary to civilize our peo
ple as well as to keep us from being
murdered. Please use all the in
fluence you cau bring to boar at
Washington to secure us justice and
protection. Faithfully yours,
H. It. Thornton.
"This letter," Rev. Mr. Wallace
says, "may causo wonder at the en
grave charge laid at the door of
Captain Healy, of the United States
cutter Boar. Some of us are already
wondering why our goornmont is
so slow in protecting American mis
sionaries.'' Hard Task for Trustees.
The trustees of the John Crerar
public library, soon to be founded in
Chicago with an endowment esti
mated at .3,000,01)0, will have a task
on their hands worthy of the Con
gregation of the Index, at Rome.
The will of Mr. Crerar roads:

and sustain n healthy, moral and
Christian heutiment in the commun
