Tho Ropresontativo Portuguese Jour
nal Talks Good Common. Souso.
Tho Uniao Lusitnnn, tho loading
and ouly iudopendont Portuguese
journal published in thoso islands,
has an autuirablu editorial articleiu
i lato issuo, giving vortv souud advtcu
to tho Portuguoso residents in this
city in regard to tho foolish and
reckless distribution of firearms by
tho Provisional Govornmont. As the
articlo in question echoes tho sonti
ments of tho Portuguoso Govern
ment as represented by its Charge
d'Affairos, there is uo doubt that
most Portuguoso who have received
guns from tho P. G. will not mako
such fools of thomselves as to fight
on bohalf of tho oligarchy now run
ning affairs horo. Tho following is
a translation of tho articlo roforred
"Wo hear that tho authorities con
tinue to distributo firearms to our
countrymen iu this city, and this
with little discrimination.
"Wo caunot but protest against
this action, and advise every Portu
guese, unless in mo uovernineni.
service, to ponder well tho conse
quences which may result from it.
"Wo do not fear that there will bo
any trouble, but should thoro be,
what would be tho most piopcr
course for tho Portuguoso of this
city? To go immediately to tho
Portuguese Consulate, or else not to
go out of his dwelling, one of tho
two. All ought to know that any
foreigner going into tho street arm
ed in timo of troublo forfoits his
civil rights. Tho Portuguese cannot
thou ask protection from his Con
sul, and if ho is wounded or arrest
ed, his Consul can do nothing for
him. If killed, ho loses his life
insurance, as all life insurance
companies contain a clauso iu their
policies which prevent the insured
from going armed in tho streots in
timo of revolution.
"Wo know that many receive
tho gun without compromising
themselves in any way, and with
tho fixocl purposo of leaving it care
fully at home, and never to bo such
an ass as to show it on tho streot.
'But othors, either by not think
ing or by persuasion, profess them
selves ready to turn out when called
upon to clo so. But for these wo
believe thero is a great danger which
is not even thought of.
''It is worthy of mention that tho
Portuguese have absolutelynotbing
to gain oy tuning piiru m ima uiutu
mout, while on tho other baud, they
havo everything to lose their lives
and their families' future.
"Do any of j'ou lsnow what it is
thoso people want who aro putting
guns into your hands?
"Probably they havo guessed."
