View of a Hawaiian.
As thoro seems to bo a sentiment
in this community somewhat ad
vorso to Prosidont Cleveland's Ha
waiian policy (it must bo understood
it's only a minority sentiment), al
low me, a Hawaiian, to give my
viows on this all important question.
It sooms to mo it our nowspapor
and annexationist frieuds would
look impartially, weighing woll the
evidence, as they know it to bo, they
would and could see for themselves
tho justice contained in said policy.
Tho groat question (and the only
ono) for America to decide is, Was
J. L. Stevens with tho American
forces at his command instrumental
in overthrowing tho monarchy?
That is all sho has to find out, and
by that alono this question must bo
settled. That being tho caso any
one with an oyo can seo for thom
solvos what tho result will, and must
bo. Doos any sauo man in this
community boliovo for a moment
that tho revolutionists could have
overthrown tho Queen's government
or any other government with the
lorcos tnoy nail at inoir commanu
tho 17th of January last? If there
is such a man to bo found here, who
does believe they could have done
it, then I can say with a clear con
science, ho is oithor a fool or an
idiot. Tho very idea that thirty or
forty old fogies and school boys
could clean out two or three hun
dred woll-equipped men, is too ab
surd to think of. Why, if it had
como to a brush, 1 would wager mj
life to a sixpence, they would have
been wiped out of existence, with
not one left to toll tho talo. That
is, of course, if they had dared to
face tho music, but they know well
enough thoro would bo no lighting;
tho thing was all cut and dried bo-
forehand, for they know perfectly
woll Uncle J. L. Stevens with
tho marines from tho Boston was
backing them (that cannot bo
douied); hence, tho bold front
they assumed. When tho Queen's
party found out "how tho land lay,"
and when tho Queen was informed
of it, sho gavo up under protest. Wo
wore not fools enough to cross swords
with Uncle Sam. Our bold "Ameri
cans" on tho other side- might have
been fools enough lo havo douo it
(by the way wo will havo a chanco
to" seo whether they will or not
shortly), but wo prefer to keep a re-
spectauio uisuiucu lruiu iiiiu, fcjuu
him all tho room ho wants, and we
are not ashamed to admit it either.
And when thoy tako it on themselves
to censure Commissioner Blount for
telling tho truth; and nothing but
the truth, they show at ouoo tho
"cloon foot," for they know in
their hearts (if thoj havo any) it was
nothing but facts that ho uttered in
his roporc. it was not n partial
