the smugglers and sellers of the

A Chinaman named Koupr Sai

tho exception of a fine of S2 imposed
on Kulaoka for drunkenness, noth
ing else was done.
A big crowd watched tho opera
tions of replacing the rudder at the
stern of the Miowera all day, a por

Business dead ? Not much !
Leastwise it is not so with tho
California Feed Company. We
have made a business for our
selves, which has steadily grown
through all tho hard times other
people aro complaining about.
Wo have just secured from Mr.
J. F. Colburn his old stand, cor
ner Queen and Nuuanu streots,
and takon possession of those
largo and convenient promises.
Wo had to do so, because our
old placo at Leleo is too small
for our fast-increasing business.
In a few days tho bark "Mauna
Ala" will bo hero again with her
fourth full cargo of Hay and
Grain, bought by our Mr. J. N.
Wright who will arrive on that
vessel. Wo prefer to select our
merchandise ourselves rather
than have others do it, which
means that wo got bettor goods
at a less price.
Wo thank our many friends
for thoir. liberal patronago for
tho past thrco years, and hope
by strict attention to a businoss
wo thoroughly understand to
merit tho patronago of us many
more.
CALIFORNIA FEED CO
The Daily Balk tin it delivtred by

Everything was quiot about tho
Polico Station this forenoon, there
boing no signs of tho armed mounted
patrol and specials from tho Ameri
can Loaguo, as thoy call thomsolvos.
Tho only oxcoption with any warliko
appoaranco was tho dotachmout of
nativo polico officers from tho differ
ent watches who havo boon dotailod
to koop watch night and day in tho
roar of the Doputy Marshal's office.
No arrests woro mado by tho polico
last night.
Tho town was in porfoct quiotuoss,
ovoryono moving about nstiossiy,
The only quory gonorally propound
ed was, "Whou will tho P. G. givo
tho answor to Minstor Willis's re
quest1?" A3 no 0110 could givo any
light on it, tho quostion wont un
answered. Everything is as quiot and almost
as still as a pleasant dream about
tho Exocutivo building to-day. Tho
watchman is not to bo soon on tho
main towor, and tho only soldiers in
sight aro thoso doing sontry duty.
Vnrv few tjdodIo woro doiuEr busi-
noss with tho departments, and tho
chirp of a cricket in tho hallways
would havo beon a disturbance.
Major Potter, secretary of tho
Foroign offico, said no answor had
j'ot boon given by tho Government
to tho rouuost of United States Min
ister Willis for tho relinquishment
of power to tho Queen. It would
probably tako a day or two to pro
paro tho roply to tho Minister's re
quisition. It is tho couoral belief that tho
Councils yostorday decided to re
turn a formal refusal to tho Minis
tor's domand for surrouder.
Minister Willis is reported to havo
askod tho Provisional Govornmont
to givo up thoir control of affairs
peaceably. It is not known whether
tho Minister stated any timo limit
for tho P. G.'s answor. Tho sup
position is that ho has not, but will
allow a reasonable timo to elapso
beforo taking tho noxt step. Wheth
er that stop will bo to land troops
in force, or to send a flag lieutenant
to domand tho ovacuation of tho
public buildings, or somo other
mode of showing authority, is all
matter of conjecture.
Nobody is found who bolieves that
the if. ii. forces will mako any re
sistance of arms to a military demon
stration, groat or small, of tho United
States. What tho Government is
evidently playing for is to compel
..Minister Willis to commit tno
United States Govornmont to some
thing that can bo construed into
warlike action. Then they would
rotire with a protest addressed to
tho Prosidont and Congress of tho
United States.
A rumor is currout this afternoon
that Wilder's steamer Claudino is
again to bo chartorod for a P. G.
mission to San Francisco. This time
it would bo to carry tho protost al
ready surmised to bo in contempla
tion. Mr. Wawn, tho gentleman in
charge of tho steamship Miowora,
said this afternoon that ho is roady
to undertake tho mission, guaran
teeing to boat tho U. S. S. Corvvin by
thrpo dnvs.
Many American and British naval
officers wore ashoro in uniform last
night. Somo of thorn, on boing ask
od if thoy were ou duty, said thoy
woro waiting for instructions.
A rodcoat British marine was doing
duty as an ordorly at the British
Consulato all forenoon. Major
Wodehouso, II. B. M.'s Minister, and
Capt. Rooko of tho Champion were
at tho Consulato part of the morn
ing. it was noticed to-day that tho
orderlies who eamo ashoro from tho
U. S. warships woro cartridgo belts
instead or tho usual white bolt. One
was asked as to why tho chaugo in
belts. Ho answored, "Woll, you seo,
wo aro ready to land at a momout's
notico." Everything is in readinos3
aboard, awaiting the Miuistor's
orders.
Vico-Cousul-Genoral Boyd was
asked this afternoon if tho Amorieau
Consulato had received any dofinito
news as to whon tho rovonuo cutter
Corwin was to leavo for tho Coast.
His roply was: "Wo know absolutely
nothing. If "you want to know any
thing as to hor leaving, you will
havo to boo Ministor Willis."
Polico Spy McNabb and sovoral
others havo beon noticed prowling
around tho city front to-day in old
clothes eagerly watching no ono
knows what.
Marshal Hitchor.ck arrived in ono
of Jim Carty's hacks at noon at tho
Polico Station with two Winchester
rifles. About half an hour later tho
captain on watch was dotailod to
station a policoman in tho roar of
tho Marshal's office to koop thoso
who woro thoro quiot, as the Mar
