Calling attention to the above

plantation owners, ranchers and
the public generally that I am
now in full supply of all of Dr.
Pottio's Celebrated Remedies, to

principles of doctoring animals
and the remedies to bo used.
Dr. Pottio stands pre-eminently
at the head of the veteri
nary profession and his leading
remedies arc known throughout
the whole civilized world. No
system known has shown such
splendid results. During the 20
years in which Dr. Pottio has
had charge of the Government
stables of New South "Wales not
a single death occurred. Dur
ing tho outbreak of "Pink Eye"
in Australia over 00,000 worth
of horses were lost, but of the
cases treated by Dr. Pottie's re
medies LESS THAN ONE PERCENT
pied. Last year over 7,000,000
animals were treated by Dr.
rottie and. Ins corps ol assis
tants, which will tillbrd some
idea of the magnitude of his
business and tho efliciency and
popularity of his remedies.
Special cases of assorted re

ranging from 5 to 1 r0, suit
able for plantations, stables and
ranches; these remedies keep
I especially call attention to
Dr. Pottio's celebrated and un
failing remedy for Maxkk, which
is go widely prevalent among
horses in these Islands at this
time. 1 regard this as a. certain
cure, and can show testimonials
for cures already eii'ected of
very aggravated cases.

A Humorist on Humor.
Dy tho late .lames lltwolt Lowell.
Jauio3 Russoll Lowoll was so os
soutiall n humorist his most np
procintivo ndmirors profor to think
of him as tho author of tho inimita
ble "Biglow 1'apors" rather than an
tho professor, tho diplomatist or
mau of tho world that any posthu
mous thing ho has to say upon
humor will bo welcomed as coming
from an expert, tho moro so since
until now it had never seen tho
licht of cold nrint. Lowell dolivor-
od many lccturo3 during tho yean
of his professorship of Bolles-Lottres
at Harvard. Thoy wore rapidly
writton: many of thorn boar marks
of hastiness of composition, and
somo, indeed, woro delivered extem
poraneously from full notes, whilo
others havo novor vet been printed.
In tho now number of tho Oontury
Magazino ono of these old lectures
is published for tho first time, but
in tho prefatory noto which intro
duces it wo aro warned that "frag
ments must bo road with tho fact
constantly hold in mind that they
do not always roprosont Lowells
maturo opinions; that, in somo in
stances, thoy givo but tho first form
of thoughts developed in other con
nections in one or othor of his lator
essays; that thoy havo not received
his last rovision; that thoy havo tho
form of discourso addressed to tho
ear, rather than that of litorary
work iinishou lor the eye.
THE FIVE PERIODS Or A MAN'S LIFE.
Lowoll disagrees with Hippol, tho
Gorman satirist, who divines tho
lifo of a man into fivo periods. Six,
ho thinks, is tho more accurate num
ber. This passage, moreovor, forms
an interesting reininiscenco of tho
poet's early life, since in it wo aro
introduced to that famous garret in
which ho wrote so much of liis most
Hippel, the German satirist,
divido3 tho lifo of man into live
poriods, according to tho ruling de
sires which successively displace
each othor in tho human soul. Our
first lontrinc, ho says, is for trousers,
tho socoud for a watch, tho third for
an angel in pink muslin, tho fourth
for monoy, and tho fifth for a "placo"
in tho country. I think ho has over
looked ono, which I should bo in
clined to placo second in point of
time tho ambition to oscape tho
gregarious nursery, and to bo mastor
of a chamber to one's self.
I remember (for I must call my
memory back from this garrulous
rookery of tho past to some porch
nearer tho matter in hand) that
when I was first installod lord of
such ainauor, and found myself the
Crusoo of that remote- attic-island,
which for near thirty years was to
bo my uumolostod hermitago, I cast
about lor works ol art with which
to adorn it. Tho garret, that El
Dorado of boys, suppliod mo with
somo prints which had onco been
tho chief ornament of my great
grandfather's studj', but which tho
growth of taste or luxury had ban
lshod from story to story till they
had arrived whoro malice could pur
suo thorn no further. These were
heads of anciont worthies Plato,
Pythagoras, Socratos, Seneca, and
Cicoro, whom, from a prejudice ac
quired at gohool, T shortly banished
again with a quousqiie tandem ! Bo
sides thoso I havo mentioned, there
woro Democritus and Horaclitus,
which last, in thoso days less tho
slave of tradition, I called Hora
clitus an error which my oxcollout
schoolmaster (I thank him for it)
would havo expelled from my head
uy tuo luuicious application ol a
counter-irritant; for ho regarded tho
birch as a kind of ushor to tho
laurel, as indeed tho true treo of
knowledge, whoso advantages could
Adam havo enjoyed during early lifo,
ho had known bettor than to havo
yielded to tho temptation of any
A DEFINITION OF IIU2IOH.
Lowoll givos a definition of humor
and at tho saino time contrasts it
with moro wit:
Humor taken in tho sense of tho
faculty to perceive what is humor
ous, anu to givo it expression seems
to bo greatly a matter of tempera
ment. Hence, probably, its namo.
It is something quite indefinable,
diffused through tho whole nature
of tho man; so that it is related of
tho great comic actors that tho au
dionco begin to laugh as soon as
thoy show their faces, or before thoy
havo spoken a word. Tho sense of
the humorous is certainly closely
allied with tho understanding, anil
no race has shown so much of it on
tho whole as tho English, and next
to thorn tho Spanish both inclined
to gravity. Lot us not bo ashamed
to confess that, if wo find tho tra
gedy a boro, wotakothoprofouudost
satisfaction ia tho farco. It is a
mark of sanity. Humor, in its
highest level, is the sonso of comic
contradiction which arises from tho
porpotual comment which tho un
derstanding makes upon tho impros
sion received through tho imagina
tion. Wo find it very natural
accordingly to Bpoak of tho
breadth of humor, whilo wit is,
by tho necessity of its being,
as narrow as a nasn ol licht-
