From tbo Star Editor.
Editor Bulletin:
I find in your cheerful columns a:i
extract from tbo San Francisco Ex
aminer which purports to tjivii n
history of ovouts in California with
which my namo has been connected.
No doubt, from tho wording of tho
article, you havo been matlo aware)
that it was written by a poriun.nl
enemy; but to that fund of Ituow
Iedgo lot mo add that the story is a
falsehood or what is worse, one of
those half-truths which are said to
bo nuro damaging than falsehoods.
Without going Into tho details of
tho so-called filibuster conspiracy,
furthor than to say that the Kxnui
Inor version is largely imaginative,
let mo show tho reliability of tho
wholo talo by comments upon this
part of it:
"Aftor considerable litigation over
nn interest in tho Sun which Smith
claimed to havo, ho was beaten in
tho courts and ho then foil back on
his old Ithaca plant, and for a while)
two San Diego Suns were shinini;
simultaneously. But clouds hovered
constantly anil persistently about
the ouo that got its viTulgenco from
Walter Q. Smith and it was soon
abandoned."
Permit mo to say that thero was
novor any litigation over my Sun in
terest. Lot mo add that I tic- -r foil
back on any "Ithaca iilant." Tho
facts of tho case were that the San
Diego Sun, after I sold my slock,
was chiefly owned by tho California
National bank of that city. When
the bank failed the Sun, as part of
its assets, wont into tln hands of tho
court. United Slates Mar.'hal Oeorgo
K. Oard took possession ot it, turn
ed out tho stockholders nnd diroc
tors, and gave mo charge of tho pro
perty with instructions to issue tho
paper dally. I did so, whereupon
tho ox-director started another .Sun.
and between tho representatives of
tlio two a bitter fight ensued, to one
of tho worsted parties of which I at
tribute some of tho malice of the
Examiner tale.
I observe that you fail to iiuolo
quite another version of uiy Califor
nia oxporietiees which was telegraph
ed Kast on Dec. 10th from San
Francisco and which appeared in
tho Now York Sun and possibly
other journals.

It is truo that tho wealthier class
havo discarded tho hrighl-huod no

nlso a fact that in tho City of -Mexico
tho naini'M of tho si rents hao

tho most urosaic. For oxniniile:
"Tho Street of tho Sad Indian" and
"Crown of Thonii street" are now
respectively "Fourth avuiiuu" and
"Diaz streel."
These ami other changes led u
to infer that Mexico wan rapidly bo
coining "gringoized," but tuis delu
sion is knocked endwise by tho fol
lowing item:
"A reiuarkublo case is being tried
in tho courts hero. A rihort time
ago n small weekly newspaper by
the name of Ml lVriijuito published
in its columns an advertisement of a
busiuoss house. Another linn in the
business hn.s mied the paper for
dnmagos, alleging that they havo
suffered loss through the publica
tion of the advertisement of their
rival. The case is attracting eon
siderable attention, as it is the first
of its kind in Mexico."
In our own country the nmn who
does not advertise is regarded as a
lit subject for the undertaker or the
lunatic asylum.
It in strange that tho Mexicans
should bo so slow to recogiiio the
advantages of advertising. Them N
no class of industrious citizens who
cannot profit by inheriting. For
iiiBtauce, a burglar overlooked eighty
dollars in a bureau drawer, and the
local papers so announced, lie re

Nowspapor Advortisiur; l'nya Ilust.
A noat illustration of the value of
advertising money wisely expended
was given at a Portland oungMou's
Christian Association mooting, wlieu
the general secretary stated that he
had some curiosity to kuow what
method of advertising reached the
most people. He had circulated
thousands of little dodger?, giving
notice of the meeting, and he asked
those who had seen them, and had
been moved to come through that
moans, to rise, l lie nan was pacKeti
as full as it could hold, and of tlio
entire number about fifteen arose.
Thou he asked all who had read tho
notice in the newspapers, and had
Ijeoii influenced by thorn, to rUc, and
tho nion rose in a body. -i',imiV (.Y
