THE SLOYD SYSTEM.
Graded Manual Training -Now Idoa
Struck the Ooaat.
In a lato San Francisco paper is
somo description of an educational
notion, now in tbo United States
but which has boon in yoguo twotity
years in Sweden. It is called the
"Sloyd System" and its advent on
the Coast is due to a visit from Gus
taf Larsson, principal of tho Sloyd
Training School of Boston. Ho
catno to Oakland at the instance of
Miss Ulako. who proposes to incor
porate his ideas into hor school.
Mr. Larsson in a lecturo at tho
Oakland High School, delivered at
j tho iustanco of Mrs. Charles Webb
I Howard, explained to tho interested
amueuco bis metuous and how ins
system differs from what is known
ana practiced in ban l rancisco ami
Oakland as manual training. Tho
idoa of industrial training, carpen
try, or, as tho so-called practical
man says, "loarning a trade, is what
is attempted in those cities, and all
this, ho says, is furthest from the
idoa of sloyd.
Tho sloyd system has its origin in
Swodon, whoro it has boon practiced
for ovor twouty years. This word
sloyd moans manual training for tho
sako of gonoral dovolopuiont, physi
cal, tnontal and moral, and it also
means a kind of hand work which
will best stimulate tbo right kind of
head work.
Tho methods are based on tho fol
lowing ideas: Tho oxorcises should
follow in a progressive order from
tho simplo to tho complex without
au injurious broak. Thoro should
Ikj tho groatest possible variety,
avoiding too groat tnontal touslou,
confusion or physical strain. Somo
usoful and coniploto articlo should
bo tho rosult sought at tho vory out
sot. Beauty of form and proportion
should bo uuited to utility. A begin
ning is mado with children just out
of tho kindorgarton. Drawing from
models is the first stop. Tho knlfo
is tho first and fundamental tool.
Sloyd demands a carefully trainod
teacher.
Tho roport in tho Call, from which
tho foregoing it culled, concludes as
follows:
This is tho point which tho Oak
land reformers first propose to win.
Tho Oakland School Department
has an adequate sum of inonoy whioh
it intends to deroto to manual train-
lion iHiiirt litlltMlouU that Ihu
Oakland ouhooN will w tho first to
iucorporato thu Shtjd nystoin. Sup
oriutoiuliMit McClyuiouiln and L'rln
uip.il MuChosuu' tooklr. Larsson to
tho educational convention nl Stock
ton on Friday evening. Mr. Larnsou
will meet tho Uorkoloy, Palo Alto
and local educators In tho artrooms
or Mr. Vlckor.v, 221 1'ost stroot.
Lotter.4 from Souator Ooorgu C.
Porlcins and Francis A. Walkor, pro
nidont ot tho Massachusetts Iusli
tuto of Technology, have added
much to tho enthusiasm of tho re
formers. Gviioral Walker iu his
letter to Mrs. 'Howard says char
acteristically: "Whilo tliiro is much oxtrava
ganco and some folly in tho utter
nuces of thorn who strongly favor
this kind of iuhtruction 1 am con
vinced that it is to bring almost in
calculable blossings. social, educa
tional, personal, to tho noxt genera
tion." After referring her to publications
on tho subject ho says:
"I havn ono othor uttorauco yet to
make. When that will como I do
not know, but 1113 mind has boon
tiweiuug lately on 1110 valuo 01 man
ual training as a means of strength
ening uu.ik cords and tondous,
straightening crooked limbs nnd
twisted joitilH, and correcting de
formities and infirmities geuerally
iu tho mind. When wo go to an
orthopedic hospital wu are shocked
and disheartened, but wo consolo
oursolvos by saying, 'Well, it is but
ouo child in a thousand who comes
horo.' 0 go to a schoolroom and
look about on a room full (too full,
of courso) of chiluron with pretty.
(JTOH.JT,
lots of
nrik'ui laces, wno cau auswor 11
quostious (too many, in fact) and do
lots of things, and wo do not inspoot
tho osistonco of tnontal dofocta of
ouo kind or auothor. It is my boliof
that manual training is coming in to
corroct, straighten aud atrongthen
minds of tho children much as tho
orthopedic Burgory docs thoir do
formod feet. 1 don't boliore that
with a generation of mou trainod in
tho mechanic arts thoro would bo
ouo railroad accident whoro thoro
aro now fivo."
Those aro also tho sentiments of
Mrs. Howard aud hor disciples. Tho
present hoad of tho manual training
department' of Oakland calls all this
bosh, which argument will prevail
with tho School Diroctors will soon
bo known, and tho educational hub
bub will thou subsido to tho oven
tonor of its way.
