Dcur Sir- There is a matter of
public interest about which I desire
to speak to you.

would call at my olUco to-morrow

Ih-ar Sir -I venture to draw your
attention to a statement published
in the Hawaiian Star on the th
instant with regard to an interviow
to which you invited me on Monday
last at your ollice.
You will no doubt remember that
1 cordially accept oil your personal
asstiraucu that the request for au in
terview was intended as au act of
courtesy on your part.
The ofloiisive paragraph in tho
, Star is therefore of more importanco
to you than even to inyself, and 1
I have waited two days in thoexpecta-
' lion that you would communicate to
me the regret, which you no doubt
feel, nt the infringement of tho rules
of courtesy towards a visitor, who
relied simply on your personal as-
; I need not remind you that tho
only witness of our interview was
i otio of your own principal otlicials,
, who saw and heard everything, al
i though he had no oilier snare in thu
proceeding. This renders it un
necessary that I should look to any
: one but yourself as chief of tho do
1 partitionl, to represent in such a
manner as you decin right, your dis
approval of the xioleiico which ap
pears to have been done to thu ordi
nary rules of ollicial procedure.
May I add that 1 nmsiticerointhu
belief that the publication of the
paragraph in question was as dis
tasteful to yourself as it can have
beuii to me. I am,
