Tho Xuuanu stream was consider
ably swollen yesterday by tho heavy
rainstorm, and in consequeuco seve
ral small shanties on tho banks were
washed awa', I he wreckago finding
its way to sea.
Near Smith's bridge and in tho
vicinity of St. Louis College the
stream was so swollen that houses
eloso to the banks were Hooded and
furniture had to be removed. Con
siderable damage was sustained by !
residents iu that locality in tho loss '
of poultry and soaking of furniture I
and carpets witli water. '
The stream at one time yesterday
afternoon roe over the 'Hnalilia
niaiiti bridge, King street, this side
of tho Chinese Theater, and it was
feared tho structure would bo wash
ed away. Tho streets in town wore

this morning, as tho cows could not
be got across. An accident happen
ed at the dairy vcMcrday. A man
was trying to cross tho stream on
horseback, when tho horse was
swept under by the freshet. Hider
and animal disappeared. Kmployees
of the dairy rushed to tho man's as
sistance antl both himself and the
horse were dragged from the stream.
It is reported that the one-mile
bridge gave way a few inches yester
day afternoon, antl two of the
wooden buildings next to it on tho
right hand side were displaced.
