Wild Weather-Death of a Prlett
Tho kotm storm, which ha boon

broke out on Uu night or last Wuil

tlay, Thursday and part of Friday.
A heavy thunderstorm raged during
tho night of Thursday, with terrific
claps of thunder and brilliant flashes
of lightning. Friday morning tho
summit of vonerable Haleakala was
covered with a dazzling mantle of
snow, which still remains. At pres
ent writing it is eloso and sultrj,
with no wind, but rainy and with in
dications of another storm. Tho
rain was very welcome ami tho plan
ters would not bo displeased to see
moro of it.

Taxation Without Uoprosontntion.
Kditoii Hi'lixtin: -
On the I5tli inst., last Thursday
night, a meeting was held by tlie
Wailuku Auuexatlou Club for the
purpose of nominating candidates
for the local Itoad Hoard. Messrs.
C. U. Wells and .Ino. W. Kalua of
Wailuku, and C. M. Walton or Wai
hee, were uoiuiuated by tho meeting,
from which iiou-anueatioiiists were
excluded, or at least denied the
nrivilcuo of votimr.
Now, while these gentlemen are
well known residents, and would .
probable make tt competent boartl.it I
would hardly seem fair to have them i
appointed on the nomination oi a
small minority of the tax paying
residents of the district, as the an
nexation club virtually is.
Why not give the other taxpayers
a show? Their votes would pro
bably be given to (he present mem
bers of the board Messrs. II. Center,
A. Barnes and 12. li. Frio!, who
have given great satisfaction during
their incumbency and greatly Im
proved the rouds in tho district; anil
it looks like the blackest ingratitude
to oust Mr. Center particularly, as
ho has geiierotihly allowed the plan
tation railroad to cart several thou
sand loads of soil gratuitously on to
tho shockingly bad piece of road
between Kahului and Wailuku,
thereby converting a stretch which
has always been the terror of way
farers into a beautiful driveway, be
sides oireriug other material assist
ance to the board. Hut then, grati
tude doc not enter into politics, and
this move is ohvioiinly made for
political reason, ami to enable the
jiarty to appea-o the hunger of one
or more of their loudest kicker
with tlie billets as secretary and
Why is it suddenly deemed neces
sary to hold elections of road boards
now, anuvay, and why, if it is neces
sary, are not all taxpayers requested
The decree of the present govern

The fact is that we are now enjoy

that this country is ruled liy annexa

ferent political creett have no voieo

may grin and bear it.
IT DOES THRIVE HERE.
