A Shameful Spectacle -Tuesday
last wo received a friendly vail from
.Mr. Thomas, editor of tho liuckhorii
Journal. Tho lively little town of
liuckhoru was in want of a lively
weekly at tho tinio .Mr. Thomas went
there and established his paper. At
I that time wo understood ho was
from tho cowboy districts of .Mon
tana, and had no doubt that ho
would bo equal to any editorial
omorgeuuy. lie hadn't been there
four weeks when wo heard that tho
boys had sized him up as a danger
oiih buzsaw to monkey with and
were consequently subscribing to
the journal in a lilwral manner. A
little later on it was understood that
.Mr. Thomas had killed two men in
Now Mexico in the years gone by,
and wo had it straight that ho
bought nn acre of ground in Duck
horn and gave out that ho intended
to oslnblish a private graveyard,
with a hospital for cripples close at
hand. Kesideuts of his towu told
us not over two weeks ago that .Mr.
Thomas was popularly supposed to
havo snud enough to go out to Hill
Williams' mountain at night, scare
up a grizzly bear of tho laruest sort.
and poke him iu tho oyo with tho
lighted end of a cigar. We were
pleased to see our esteemed contem
porary of tho Journal, and as soon
as wo could get away from the press
of inisluess wo tonlt mm out to show
him tho town. Wo noticed that ho
had two guns and a bowio knife with
him, and uisdeiueauor wont to prove
that anyone walkiug on hid uoattails
would gel hurt. .While proceeding
down Apache avenue to lot him see
the wonderful progress of civiliza
tion wo rati up against Hang King,
the heathen lnundryinau. The crit
ter stole ten pounds roller composi
tion from tho Kickor ofllce a few
mouths ago, and we caught him and
almost broke him in two for It. Since
then he has been run up and down
by ovory 12-year-old boy in tho town
who felt like exercising himself.
Wo wore passing the hoathou al
most unnoticed, when he uttered a
Chinese warwhooo and rushed at
Mr. Thomas and there was a mix up
for n minute. The discovery that
Hang Ling had sand paralyzed us
for a time and wo did not oiler our
esteemed contemporary any assist
ance. We of course looked for him
to pull his guns and open lire, or at
least make use of the corn cutter in
his belt, and tho reader can imagine
our toolings aim those or the crowd
which quickly assembled when Mr.
Thomas finally shook the heathen
olT and started up the avenue on a
gallop. Hang Ling not only follow
ed close at his heels, but gave him
the boot at brief intervals, nor did
he let up until the iiiieldiorn editor
had passed the first mile post. The
heathen returned to explain that
Mr. Thomas owed him fiir washing
done iu Huekhorii and refused to
pay, but his victim kept right on
traveling toward tho Utah line. It
isn't at all likely he will ever show
up iu this town again, and as soon
as the all'air becomes known iu Uticlt
horu the bovs will call a meetiui;
and give htm the usual live days iu i
which to move. We are sorry for '
Mr. Thomas. Instead of being cut ;
out for an Arizona editor nature
must have intended him for a New
huglaud rabbit hunter,
has been crossed from on
and we htiall "esteoiu nun no more.
