Particulars of tho native disturb
ance at Fiji rucuivetl by tbo Luious.
S. Company's steamor Ovaltt on July
8, show that tho outbreak was more
serious than was at first thought.
The last intelligence of the alTair
stated that Sir John Ii. Thurston,
the Governor, had left Suva with an
armed forco for tho scene of tho dis
turbance, aud tho papers received
on July 8 give details of tho expedi
tion. Leaving Suva on Juno 11, the
Governor reached Xadurl ou tho
13th. aud assembled tho leading
chiefs and enrolled a number of na
tives for service. Leaving tho town
some hours afterwards Na Tua was
reached in tho evening, aud tho
party camped for tho night. As it
was reported that scouts from tho
rioters bad been seen in the neigh
borhood, strong guards were posted
for tho night, and instructions sunt
to the revolted town lo meet the
Governor the next day. Tho chief
of tho town nas also lo inform tho
Calalovu chiefs and others that war
rants had been issued for their ap
preheusioti, aud they had butter
surrender without any further trou
ble. I'he town where tho disturbance
took placo is uamed N'acoreaga, and
is situated ou tho right bank of one
of tho allluonts of the Drekoli Hirer,
and at tlui wusl foot of tho IllOUU-
I tains, on tho crest of which are tho
towns ol Ualalovu anil taumuri
muri. Nacereaga had bueu Ue.ierted,
aud as the head of the force march
ed into it tliuy surprised a party of
tho natives propitiating tho epiril of
a former Ltuli, Scaiintin, by offerings
upon the old chief grave, do sur
prised were they by tbo suddenness
of Ihii) arrival tiiai they tied in the
midst of their "ealjorn," leaving
their yacoua and other things con
nected with this old heathen cere
monial behind tliein. The grave,
which was an exceedingly large ouo
consisting of tliree Hers in pyram
idal form hud beuu just cleared
and cleaned, it was only too evi
dent that heat lien practices, sup
posed lo have long fallen into
ileeueludo were, hero at least, in full
Tho Governor hero received In
formation that the wholo ot five
small villages and part of another,
as well as some Itirlnileuluhnracturs
from two of th hill districts, had
joined tho rioters. It was also found
that the two natives who had been
killed by tho rioters at tho first out
break had been presented at a
heathen temple recently oructed,
aud afterwards oaten with all tho
attendant ceremonies of tho cautii
bal period. A council was hold that
evening, the opinion being that none
of tho rioters wore likely to surrend
er, being so worked upon by two
heathen priests, aud as it was evi
dent that a number of the surround
ing people were being iuiluouced by
the rioters, the Governor decided to
use forco in their apprehension.
Accordingly tho next inoruiug a
move was made, tho rioters being
seen on tho mountain top waving
their Hags, and blowing couch shells
iu defiance. Ou arriving within hail
iuu distance of the town of Caumuri-
muri, tho chief ot tho rioters, who is
named Quarauivalu, aud his follow
ers were called upon to surrender,
but without avail, aud tho force theu
made ait attack upon tho town,
which was fortified. After a sharp
engagement tho town was forced,
with a loss of four wouuded ou tho
Government side, and eleven killed
on the other. A general Uight
ensued, Quarauivalu escaping iu the
confusiou by some side path, and
the women aud children by sotno
other secret track such as is usually
prepared iu Fijian mouutaiu for
tresses iu tho event of tho placo be
ing carried. Two men wore killed
by leuping from the precipice. When
order was restored aud the attack
ing party wore able to look round,
the bodies of the meu Samisoni aud
huk in sa, murdered ou the btu in
btaut, were found. Tho bodies were
partly dismembered, and cut open,
l'ortious of the viscera, iu each case,
had beeu removed. From tiie man
ner iu which a conical stone, sup
posed to be the bhriue of the
"Tovoro," was dressed, no doubt re
mained as to acts of cnuuibalisra
having been committed upon tho
spot only a few dayn previously.
The trunks of tho murdered meu
were then buried, ns well us the
bodies of those killed iu the attack.
Tho Intrc kuluu was burnt, aud tho
stone, or vain iiHrroro,druggod from
its silo aud hurled down the moun
tain aide. The only prisoners made
woro one or two old people, iucapa
bio of Uight, and one or two child
ren. From these information was
obtained not only of the commission
of acts of cauuilmlism, but as to iho
names of iIiohi actively coucerued
lu such matters, those being at ouco
On tho 18th tho chief rioters wore
arrested, aud the party returned to
Suva ou the Jltli. I ho u over nor
met the chiefs, mid people of the dis
turbed districts and informed them
that tho many existing petty moun
tain towns must bo vacated, aud
that as soon at arrangements wore
completed they would bo concen
trated into three or four larger
towns, where they could bo better
looked after, and where they were
less likely to become tho confede
rates aud victims of knaves or fools
of llioir own race. Aurktaml lltnilil.
