Free Kindergarten for Kngllah
Speaking Foreigners.
Honolulu has always maintainod
a fair famo for beuovoleut entor
prisus. He.'idcs friendly societies of
different nationalities Us cosmopoli
tan clinrities haro been of no mean
account. Iu the kindergarten scheme
just coming prominently to the
front, several ladies bid fair to morit
blessings for good works. Iter. F.
V. Damon has tho credit of inaugu
rating these most valuable institu
tions, but the ladies have now taken
hold of the scheme to extend and
establish it. Mr. Damon's efforta
resulted in the starting of free
kindergartens for four different na
tionalitiesHawaiian, Portuguese,
Chinese, and Japanese. These have
been brought to public attention
freotioiitlv iu incidental news men
tion iu the papers, with an occasional
appeal or description at length to
on list the interest of well-inclined
people.
Now certain benevolent ladies
purpose opening a new kiudergat tou
for tho children of foreigners other
thau those already mentioned. It
is an ngeeable duty to aid in tho
project by giving here some particu
lars of its nature and scope. Tuition
will Ixt free, but any patrons who
dctiro to contribute to the general
fund can do so. Monthly pledges
howerer small will be very accepta
ble. Envelopes are provided for
such pledges, which when supplied
with the amounts may bo left at
certain stores iu town. In case there
aro more applicants thau can be ac
commodated in tho school, prefer
ence will be given to those whoso
means of support are most limited.
An important feature of the
schemo will be tho starting of a
training diss forkiudergatteu teach
ers under the direct charge of Miss
ICastuian, horyolf a graduate of a
similar class in San Francisco. It
will be conducted on the same lines
as that in San Franoiu-0, aud stu
dents will on passing examination
at the end of the term receive a
certificate that will be honored by
heads of kindergartens iu the United
States. They will while in the class
have the advantage of practical
work iu the kindergarten in fact,
tho class will combine normal aud
model school features.
For the purpose of the new klu
ilerirnrlmi tlm Trustees of tho
Quecu's Hospital have put Queen
I I-'.iiiiiih linll inlii a iMimliUon of thor
ough repair. Alterations have been
made to suit tho ends designed, aud
a liberal application ot tho paiut
brush has made the interior cleauly
aud attractive. It is made an invit
ing place for tho kindergarten cen
ter, aud the management will add
all the attracttoiiA possible for tho
children Heltig at the intersection
of two of the principal streets
Ueretania and Niiuauu tho school
building and its ample grounds will
prominently advertise the beneficent
institution to the public. Applica
tions for admission to tho kiuder
garteu or t raining class may be made
to the principal, Miss Eastmau, or
to Mrs. Harriot L'aitlo Coleman,
the energetic financial secretary.
