THURSDAY, SEI?T. 18, 1K4.
A case of liver fluke in one of his
patients hai been reported by a
physician to tho Hoard of Health.
This disease has been prevalent
among animals hure for several
yeart, but tho medical authorities
tepresunt it as very raro in human
kind. It is a parasite bred in grass
and plants by tho sido of streams,
and may be taken into the system
through drinkiug tho iufected water,
eating watercress or vegetables irri
gated with such water, etc. There
is a heavy load of Hfule vegetable
matter in the present scant water
supply from Nuuauu. To mako tho
water safe for drinking it should be
boiled and iilturud.
An attempt was mudo by tho Star
to force tho hauds of the American
League in the matter of a proposal
of union from the Schuoten Club.
Its little game was to announce the
union as all but ratified. Tho au
nouucuuiunl has been received, how
ever, with wrath and clamor and
uvil-speakiug on tho side of the
League. Uarkis is uotwilliu. The Star
made no bones of the fact that the
object of the proposed union was to
secure a couibiualion that would
dictate tho distribution of public offices-
in other words, the devoted
SchueUuuitus Ilud they need help to
divide the spoils and do not kuow
n hero to go but into the arms of the
Leaguers whom they had vainly
hoped to rival as a power for food.
What they will now do after beiukT
rudely repulsed by the Tutuinauy
tiger of the new republic is some
thing to bo awaited with the languid
curiosity that has attached to tho
Subuotiou Club's vaganus from tho
begiuuiug. As, however, the club is
on a more liberal basis of organiza
tion thau the league, it would not bo
surprising one tine day to sue tho
club overshadowing its older rival.
Tho registration of voters for tho
coming eluclious is progressing quito
rapidly. Up lo last ovuuiug, the
number registered was 1!MX), divided,
by nationality, as follows:
Hawaiian Irlnnd . .. . .'RW
America . . JO I
(Ireulllrituluuud Coluule 2KI
Ocrin.uiv .. VM
I'urliigiii and Iflatnl- . ... ITS
Allutlier- .. 1U
Uf thoso registered, 118 are en
titled to vote forSuuators aud l(epro
soutatives, and -112 for Koprosonla
tlteH only. Adurtitrr.
According to tho foregoing tho
Untinli rehideuts hate scarcely de
served all tho abtiite heaped upon
tlioiu for opposiug the 1. O. and tho
Republic, by tlio sensation-mongers
who supply the Amoricau press with
llawaiiau "news" at space rates.
Tho number of voters registered of
llritinli is not far from equal iu pro
portion to thoso of Amoricau nation
ality, according to the respective
populations of both in tho census
records. More thau a fourth of the
Uritish mules miuihrod iu 1 S'J I have
registered, while lens thau a fourth
of tho American males hate clone so.
The Star's threadbare battle-flag of
spurious Americanism hitherto
Uaimted iu the faces of all who pre
ferred evolution to revolution has
now scarcely a shred loft to float on
a breco from its own bellows. If
American principles had been ob
served hure, there would be no re
public here to-day utider which to
