army three days to march from a
posiliou at Ityuzau, near Seoul, to
the viciuitv of Onzan. On the morn
ing of July 28th tho army camo with
in sight of tho Chincso tents. The
Chiuuso camp was situated on a hill
at Seikwan, an important position on
the Gazau road, aliout seventeen
miles from Gazau. In front of the
hill are rice-paddies and marshes,
crosavd in the middle by a little
stream which ruus into Oazau bay,
and a narrow path lends up to the
hill. It was a position easy to de
fend aud hard lo attack.
Corea is far hotter than Japan.
The temperature since the 21th nad
been IMS or 1)7 degrees. Tho troops
having to carry a heavy load, besides
their ntles, through a wretched road
were cilrctnclv fatigued, and from
their arrival at 10 a.m. they wero al
lowed to rest themselves, though the
enemy's camp was only throo miles
away. But as they had uo tents,
they had to sit uuder tho burning
sun on the crass, whilo Goneral
Oshitua himself could only find two
mattings lo shado hinisolf. There
was no pure water and tho troops
had to slako their thirst with the
muddy water of tho paddies.

two wings forming two separate
