Peoplo Thronglnjf the Bite.
Adelaide, Sopt. 1. Roports have
reached Lore from Cooltranlio to the
effect that a fabulously rich gold
reef has beeu discovered at the Lon
donderry initio, which is situatod
eleven miles south of Coolgardio.
The roof is three feet wide and iuta
throe foot out of tho ground. Tho
lode is tnarrulously rich, ouo-tenth
of the ore being gold. Work has
been carried on in tho load for six
weeks, aud tho tailiugs now weigh
ouo and one-half tons. A man who
arrived by coach from Coolgardio
Inst uight says ho offered thuownora
of tho claim JCIIXK) per day for a
monopoly of tho claim, but his pro
position was rejected.
Intelligence from tho ruino is to
tho offcut that 1000 ounces of gold
have been dollied out in threo weeks,
whilo specimens measuring a foot'
square are so heavy that one man
cannot lift them. One splendid
block, uiuo cubic inches in size, is so
rich that Mr. Elliott, ouo of tho
uiinoowners, paid his mates 2000
for their shares in it. Tho dollied
gold aud several specimens aro do
posited at tho Union bank. Tho
claim is situated threo miles from
"Hurbauk's Dirlhday Gift."
Tho reef was discovered by a
party of six tired aud disheartened
diggers who wore returning from
Lake Lefroy. They were prospect
iug along tho route whou they atruck
the outcrop, which showed pieces of
gold weighing a pennyweight each.
In tuobogiuumg of May leases wore
taken up in twenty-four aero lota.
Later an application waa lodged for
exemption for all savo the ceutral
block becauso of tho diillculty in
obtaining water. Tho application
was never made to tho warden's
court, but no work waa done on the
blocks, which hnvo been consequent
ly jumped. All tho work baa boon
done ou the ceutral block.
THE LESSUES 01' THE TnEAflCIIE.
The holders of tho leasts are
Messrs. Elliott, a farmer of Avoca,
Victoria, Mills, liuxley, Gardener,
Carter, aud Dawson, all of whom
have received offers of immonse
sums for tho property. J. E. Scan
tlebury of Sydney offered 25,000
cash and Capt. Dogolholo aud others
have matte similar oilers, all being
Tho gold in sight is estimated to
bo worth much more than the sums
meutioued, despite tho little work
done. Tho country is held for long
distances at each end of tho pros
pectors' claim. Tho reef is describ
ed as of ironstone and the gold ia
carried iu clear quartz, slightly amber-tinted,
and a coarse wire of gold
stands out of the stouo. Experts
consider that fully one-third of tho
visible oro is gold.
Three of the original holders of
the Londonderry property sold their
sixth interests for X'UOOO each soon
after gold was first struck. Gold is
rapidly accumulating at the Cool
gardio bauks. The owners of the
Loudouderry claim admit having
banked over (tOOOouueos, with 20,000

Prospector Mills made the discov
ery which has creuted so much ex
citement, llo was a mile aud a half
from camp, when he came across one
of tho mnuy large blows which are
characteristic of tho country. lie
was astonished on rubbing his baud
across a protruding piece of stone
to see gold Btaudiug out prominent

tho bowlder aud at hu feet lay a
uiagniuceut spocimou literally stud
ded with coarse gold, while before
him was a spleudid reef of almost
puro gold. Mills lost no time iu
tnkiug several pieces fiom tho reef
aud carefully covered it with earth.
He foiud his mates and communi
cated to them the startling intelli
gence. The camp was hastily struck
mid removed to the locality of the
discovery. Next moruiug a loase of
twttuty-itVA acres was pegged off and
adjoining blocks at eaoh ond were
aUo taken up during that week. In
the menu time they set to work to
further examine the reef, aud stored
the precious metal in their tent.
They also commenced to systematic
ally develop the property. Une of
