Eorron Bulletin: j
Having known Billy Cunningham :
for some yean and having beon his
companion on morn than one of his
bunting trips, l tiiink i am anie 10
throw ttome light on the discussion
which is extant regarding the action
of those people who are trying to
ftrevent him from getting a shooting
First, I should liko to know who
has done more to improve the shoot
ing on these islands. Biliy, as is
well known, has imported several
varieties of pheasants at considora
hle trouble and cost to himself. It
is true the actual value of the pheas
ants was paid to him nflr much
bother in collecting the money.
Some of these pheasants woro given
to Mr Brown and turned down at
Waipio, whero they have dono well.
Billy has sent pheasants to Stock-
ton, to tne Uoluen Unto 1'arK anu 10
several other places on the Coast,
and has received very satisfactory
letters from the Park Commissioners
and others in California with regard
to them. This shows the interest he
has taken in acclimatizing these
birds on the Pacific Coast as well as
in tho Hawaiian Islands. He has
imported Irish and English setters
and pointers of tho b-st blood to bo
obtained, thereby improving tho
breed of hunting dogs on tho islands,
and he is almost the only man who
has done this. One of theso dogs ho
refused 50 for and sold to one of
tho signors of tho protest for $30 be
cause he would sooner let a friond
have tho dog at a less prico than
sell him to a man ho did not know
so much about.
It is a well-known fact that Messrs.
O. L. Hrowu, E. A. Mcluoruy and
Cunningham have been partners in
their hunting trips 'or the past five
or six years, anil why should the
signers of the protest so suddenly
turn the cold shoulder on ono of
their numbor, and that one, ho who
has douo mora towards fostering
and improving Iegitimato sport luau
all tho rest put together. Sono
years ago ono of the signers, Mr.
Mclneruy, objected to the forming
of a sportsmen's association, on tho
grounu mat it partook too muun 01
tho nature of a monopoly, and when
a later association was proposed
Cunningham objected to it for tho
very sanio reason. It appears to mo
ami it must appear to all lovers of
fairplay that tho present proceeding
is a glaring injustico and ono uttorly
incompatible with true sportsman
like fooling, and tho sooner the
wholo business is sottlod either ono
way or thoothor tho bettor it will bo
for all parties concerned. Messrs.
Brown, Mclnorny & Co., who aro so
confident that thoy havo proof post
tivo to support their accusations
against Cunningham, must havo
loen in pretty closo asso"lation with
him at tho time they obtained their
alleged proof and it would bo well
for them to remember that it Is dan
gerous for those living in glass
liousos to throw stones arouud to
any great oztout. Old Timer.
