FRIDAY, OCT. 12, 1894.
XT HATKB HAWA1IANB.
From some inexplicablo motive the
Advertisor is raking up ancient bit
tory to throw mud in tho face of the
native Hawaiian race. One of its
latest freaks in thin line is to dig out
of a newspaper Clo of 1810 an ac
count of the elocution of Kama
navva, grandfather of Queen Liliuo
kaiaui, for tho murder of his di
vorced wife. Upou the face of it
this is a shocking episode in com
paratively recent Hawaiian history.
Yet whon viewed in tho light of an
cient Hawaiian superstitious univer
sally hold withiu tho memory of the
generation then living, tho ghastly
hue of tho event becomes very groat-
ly modified. Iu tho oldon times the
high chiefs held the power of life
and death over all their vassals and
subjects. Under tho surviving influ
ence of this heathen superstition
Katuauawa, from authentie accounts,
felt ho was within his rights in get
ting away with his divorced wife, to
permit him to marry a new wife
which ho could not do, while the
first oue lived, under the missionary
laws. Nolther tho aristocracy nor
the commonnlty of the Hawalians
regarded his crime with horror, aud
his execution only made a sort of in
teresting holiday for them. But it
hardly lies with tho English race to
upbraid the Hawaiian race with
bloody crimes committed iu the in
fancy of Hawaiian civilization.
Wliou tho light of tho gospel of Cal
vary had boon shining on merry
Eugland for ages, it is not ancient
history that records it, many a prince
and princess, as well as other meu
aud womon some more noble in na
ture oven thau in name were foully
done to death to clear the way to
tho throne or make safe its tenure
for ambitious aspirants or ruling
sovereigns with uneasy-resting
heads. Aud then whon the same
raco carried tho "lamp of life" across
stormy seas to America, what a re
cord of brutal and most barbarous
murder and torturings was made in
the name of tho same religion that
is claimed to have rogonorated Ha
waiil The burniug, and hanging,
and drowuing of helpless old women
for witchcraft in Massachusetts,
anil, later, the infamous hounding
to grave of Koger Williams, an apos
tle of tho same Christianity, iu
llhode Island theso aro modern
historical iucidenta that might as
juatly be flung in the faces of the
professed white Christians in Hono
lulu to-day, as the crime of Kama
nawa and its expiation are in the
faces of nawaiians aud their royal
family.
One of these journalistic scaven
gers amidst the stale debris of tho
dead past has sueered at ivalakaua
iu his youth as an uukeiupt loafer
of the water front. The fact is that
iu 1813 tho family to which Kalo-
katia belouged was regarded as the
leadiug oue of tho kingdom. Us
members were tho largest laud
owiiors, but Kalakaua'8 father like
himself being a spendthrift got rid
of much of the property. To show
the Rtaudiug of Kalakaua's family,
the following extracts are taken
from n niisaiunary book Kev. Shel
don Dibble's History of the Sand
wich Inlands, published at Laliniua
luua iu ISlIt. What appear iu
brackets are uotos ou tho margiu of
the copy boforo us at this writing:
