Voted On of the Beet Presentations i
By ths Sailey Oo.
The presentation of this great
drama on the boards of the Opera
House Tuesday night was the great
est event of this or any former season
on the Honolulu stage. When the
curtain rose and the players faced
the audience there was a general
feeling that Mr. Dailey's ambition
to please theatre-goers had trans
ported him to attempting a task too
heavy for the calibre of bis troupe.
But right royally was this distrust
dispelled. Tho actors carried a
remarkably accurate conception of
the spirit of tho drama to a finished
execution. Even the minor parts
were excellent. Tho three leading
characters were, howovor, exception
ally good. Mr. Snow's characteriza
tion of Faust rovealed the warring
of conscience with temptation too
great to be overcome. It was not
tho feeble succumbing of a weak
mind but the unsuccessful strugglo
I of a lofty soul. Mr. Hallet as Mephis-
to displayed great talent without
ranting declamation. His enuncia
tion was distinct and his stago
presence perfect. Marguerite in

the highest dogreo. Montion must

of Valontine by Mr. Scott. It was a
noble part nobly portrayod. Tho
scenio effects wore simply marvelous
for the facilities of our stage. Mr.
Dailoy dosorvos the warmest com
mendation for hit energy, skill and
liberality in presenting tho lurid

to tho activity of Kilauoa itself.

There was a heated argument on
the street this morning between con
tractors as to whether the following
lettering on the front of the new
building of Allen & Robinson is cor
rect: "1853 Allen Block. 1801". One
maintains that there should be a
imriod after the years, and anothor
that there should not. It is simply
a mattor of taste, but, sjisen not ap
pearing after the years it would bo
better to drop the point after the
words. It is the fashion now in
title pages of books to omit punctu
ation marks at the ends of lines,
