CAPTAIN COOK BKTUKWB.
He Rotates Hts Adventures ia tke
John Good.
Captain J. W. Cook was a paasen
t,'ir on the Btuainer W.O. iiall Tues
day from windward. It will be re
membered the captain and two
others loft here over three months
ago lu the schooner John Oood, for
parts unknown. The captain tells
the following story of the adven
tures of the party:
"Wo left Honolulu on Wednesday
morning, August 22, not for Samoa
as has been slated, but for an island
in the boulh raciuc, uninhabited
and uusurveyed, and owned by my
self. The island cannot be found in
the general chart of tho South
l'acilic. After being out weeks we
encountered a strong westerly cur
rent and our provisions were soaked.
1 decided to make for Palmyra isl
and, knowing it would take about a
mouth if we headed for Fauuing's
Island. We arrived at Palmyra on
Sept. I'J and took out all our provi
sions and laid them on the beach to
dry. We remained there fire days.
Palmyra is in lat. 6 41 N.. 1G2' 18"
V. There wero an abundance of
fish and sharks and a few choice
shells. There were also cocoanuta
in abundance. On the S. E. inlet a
vessel drawiuKO feet of water could
safely anchor, the harbor being u
smooth as that of Honolulu. After
luaviug had bad weather in lat. 10
and anally lauded five miles north
of South Point, Hawaii. Wo drop
tied anchor and ouo of tha men
jumped overboard and made fast a
Hue from the stern to the rocks.
The other man went overboard and
1 was the last man to leare tho boat.
We all lauded safely. This waa on
Oct. 11. Clothes were dried and we
started to walk over the a-a road, a
distance of twelre miles before we
reached the government road. We
slept on the a-a all night. On Mon
day afternoon we reached Monsar
rat's ranch and were kindly treated
by the mauager, Mr. Uranberg. On
'1 iiosday moruiug the manager and
myself started for the beach on
horseback. We reached a native
Hulling hut and hired a cauoo and
four natives. When we arrived
where the boat had been left, we
found it smashed on the rocks. We
returned to the ranch on Tuesday
night atul on Wednesday I walked
to Hookeua to connect with the W.
O. Hall. There I was well treated
by Mr. Amalu. My companions
were to leave for Kau, and if they
could not get work they were going
to llilo. 1 lost everything chrono
meter, sextant, North and South
Pacific charts, navigation books,
cltithes."
On closing the history of their
adventures the captain said he would
add some poetry and reeled olf as
follows:
I Mood ii Kin the lonely deelc
Ami enred upon the ulthl
And wu chd tho uealward-uolui; alar
l'af etowly out of al;lit.
My euurae wan north liorlheait,
