Barbarous Treatment of a Bought Ohinoee Girl by Her Mistreat. A ChinoBO girl five or six years of ago was brought before Marshal Hitchcock yesterday afternoon. The waif had been located by Detective Larseu in a native bouse, where she was being harbored by a native woman. The girl told a pitiful nlory of cruelty and suffering. She was brought from China when but a babe and was purchased by a Chi uuse woman in this city, who used her as n survaut and maid of all work. She was cruelly treated by her foster mother, being beaten and nearly starved sometimes. For uverv litLlu misconduct, and even without any fault, she would be beaten. She showed to tho Marshal on her body evidence of tho beat ings she had received from the foster mother. After hearing tho girl's story tho Marshal advised the issuance of a warrant for the arrest of the Chi nese woman for cruelty. The little girl was then taken to the home of the uativo woman, where she will be kept in the future. Before being taken there she was asked whothur she would return to her foster mother. The girl replied that she would not live with her under any consideration. How to Turn Back tho Clock. "What time is it. Maifgiot" said John, with an uneasy sense that he ought to be ou his homeward way. "I'll go and look." she answered. Stepping quietly into the kitchen the girl puthed the clock hauda back an hour, and returning, said, "It's only half-past nine by our o'clock: you cau stay au hour longer. .So J oil u stayed, for lovers are not eager to part, and he needed no coaxing. Tho next morning, how ever, he overrent himself, and Mag gieV father, at his breakfast, having miaflod the train, he intended to journey by that day, wondered how tho good old clock could have lost au hour in the night, liut Maggie didn't explaiu. She meant to set it right again before going to bed, but forgot, which shows once more what uvurybody should ruuiember -that we cau set back the clock, but we cannot set back tho time. All the same it is possible occa sionally to regain lost things, lu a woman's letter recently received, I liml this sentence: "7Vty tell mr I tuok ten yntri yumiycr tlitin I did." Ami if she felt as she lookod she was to all practical purposes teu years younger. For, although a clock (ace'looks the same no matter what time it It, a human face doesn't. V'iof changes with the condition of the "workn," or the life behiud it. The letter goes ou thus: "lu the spring of of 18S0 1 felt weak and low. 1 had a bad taste iu the mouth and a thick slimy phlegm cove-rod my mouth and tongue. 1 was sick iu a tuoruiug, retching and vomiting a watery Html. 1 had great pain iu the head and wa very mazy, befog at times so bad I could hardly stand upon my feel. "Gradually 1 grew weaker and weaker until 1 could scarcely walk about the house, and but fur the necessity of atteudiug to my family, 1 should have boon laid up. My life was a burden and a misery to mo, and I ofteu wished myself dead. "Sometimes better and at other times worse; this was my general condition for tea years, during which long period of sulToriug 1 was treat ed by the doctor, and took every kiutl of mudiciue I could hear tell of, but got uo better. "lu November, 1SIH), I read in a book of a medicine called Mother Soigol's Curative Syrup, aud got a bottle from Mr. . Hanks, the che mist. After 1 had taken a few doses 1 found my food agreed with uie better. 1 kent on with the Syrup and gradually gained strength. I had become so thiu aud emaciated tli rough all those years of suffering that it took time to fully restore me. liut I nin now in better health than I ever wut in my life, aud my recovery tits astonished my friends. They tell me I look teu years younger than 1 did for takiug the Syrup, iiow 1 wish 1 had known of it yean sooner! My husband aud friends had given up all hope of my getting butter, but noiio of us knew of Mother Seigel'n Syrup. "Ou mentioning to the Itev. E.
