ANNUAL LIBRARY MEETING.
Satisfactory Reports Given Tho S.
N. Oastlo Fund.
Yoslorday ovenlng thoro was hold
tho annual meeting of tho Honolulu
Library and Reading Room Associa
tion. Reports of officors showed the
institution to bo in a healthy stato.
There is $9200 in the permauont
fund, yielding average interest of
seven and four-tenths percent.
It was announced to the meeting
that Mrs. S. N. Castle had paid S15,
(KK) to the Association, in accordance
with tho wish of her late husband.
The money is invested in Oahu
Railway 7 percent bonds. It is to
be known as tho S. N. Castle fund,
and tho only condition attached is
that its proceeds shall not bo used
for matter of a transient value In
appreciation of tho gift, tho Associa
tion made Mrs. Cattle and her family
lifo members, and a committee was
appointed as follows to convey to
that lady the thanks of tho Associa
tion: W. F. Allen, Win. Foster and
C. T. Rodgers.
Trustees were elected for tho
ensuing year as follows: C. R.
Uishop, Rev. C. M. Hyde, Win.
Fostor, Mary A. Uurbank, W. F. Al
len, Dr. C. T. Rodgers, II. Water
houso, S. B. Dole, Dr. N. B. Kinor
sou, J. H. Fisher, Geo. 1. Castlo, M.
M. Scott and II. A. Parmeleo. Tho
trustees who were present hold a
meeting and olected tho following
ollicors:
President, C. R. Bishop.
Vice-President, M. M. Scott.
Secretary, H. A. Parmeleo.
Treasurer, Mary A. Uurbauk.
Tho administration committee re
ported tho absolute transfer of tho
books formorlv belonging to tho
Oovernment library, which had at
first been deposited with tho Asso
ciation as a loan. Miss Uurbank
was commended for the ability with
with which sho performod tho duties
oi librarian.
A Now Horror in Storo
A Rome correspondent of the
Daily Telegraph gives an account of
the remarkable doings of an Italian
pianist, Gravagni, who won a wager
by playing uninterruptedly for 2
hours at a stretch. We are told that
ho commenced with a selection from
Beethoven, Mozart, Webor, and
Wagner, "executed" (guillotined
would, I think, hao hum a more
appropriate word) two complete
operas of Wagner, etc. After the
feat had been accomplished tho
pianoforte thrasher olTered to wairer
one thousand lire that he could go
on playing then and there for six
hours foiijror without one minute's
repose. 1 ho challenge was accepted
on the spot, and Gravagni was again
victorious. Tho report says:
''Whether tho laurels ho has wou
aro something to bo proud of is
iuit another matter." I should
think so, indeed. The only satis
factory bit in the account is that
''his aching hands were sadly swollen
and disfigured." Perhaps it might
have been added that if he livl ever
been credited witli being a musician
that theory was completely exploded.
No wonder that "one of the gentle
men who staed up the first night
and part of tho next day is now con
fined to his bed." It is to be hoped
that Sigtior Gravagni will not take
to traveliug, but will bo content to
stay at homo and win fresh laurels
thoro.
Modol of Punctuation.
Tho following paragraph from tho
Advertiser's editorial is commended
to tho Board of Education as a
model of punctuation for tho schools.
Its commas woro presumably dashed
in with a pepper box:
"Wo repeat, what wo havo said
before, in our columns, that Sulli
van, an Irishman, in his History of
Ireland, says, that for a hundred
years, ovary plan made to relievo
Ireland, oi nnglisii oppression, lias
been bo tray en by an
rishmau. So
it will bo uoro."
Common Senao
Should bo used in attempting to
euro that very disagreeable disease,
catarrh. As catarrh originates in
impurities in tho blood, local appli
cations can do no permauont gootl.
The common sense method of treat
ment is to purify the blood, and for
this purpose thero is no preparation
superior to Hood's Sarxaparilla.
Hood's Pills cure constipation by
restoring peristaltic action of tho
alimentary cannl.
