Trial of a Buyer of the Birds Leads
to tbo Detection of the Thief.
A young Portuguese named Frank
Gorva was arrested this morning for
the larceny of nine chickens, the
property of a native at Makiki.
Another Portuguese was arrested
and tried in tho District Court the
other day for the theft of the samo
fowls. Ho was found not guilty and
discharged. It traspired in the evi
dence for tho defense that the
chickens had been sold to the ac
cused by Gorva. The last-named
stated that he had been told by his
employer to catch tho chickens if
they ever came on the premises, and
that he (Gorva) would bo givou some
of them. He (lid so and was given
some of tho fowls, which he sotd to
a Portuguese friend. Gorva also
statod that some of the fowls found
their way into his employer's pot.

The O. ft O. S. S. Oceanic, W. M.
Smith, commander, arrived at noon
to-day from tho Orient. Pursor E.
O. Tuttle furnishes the following re
port! Left Hongkong on Oct. Ml,
Nagasaki on Nov. 1, Kobe on the
Gtb. and Yokohama on the 9th. Ar
rived at Honolulu Nov. 19. Passago
from Yokohama (11:31 a. tn.). 10
days, 18 hours aud 10 minutes. Had
moderate weather throughout the
passage. Tho Oceanic brought
eleven cabin passongers, 167 Chinese
and 01 Japanese aud 189 tons of
freight for this port. She will leave
for San Francisco at 1 o'clock to
morrow afternoon. Among the pas
songers for Honolulu are several
