Xilobana Art Tongue Exhibition on
Many people visited tho art exhi
bition on Saturday evening, notwith
standing other attractions. Profes
sor Berger was present with an
orchestra, pleasing the ear while the
exhibits delighted tho eye. The
electric lights were strong, and in
their steady, white glow the paint
ings were amenable to eren a more
satisfactory examination than in
daytime. There will be three moro
Saturday evenings on which to nee
the exhibition. It is open in day
timo on other days.
Mrs. Augusta Graham has noth
ing in wood this time, such as gave
much pleasuro at the first exhibi
tion. She has the plaster models,
howover, which she moulded for
copying from iu wood. They show
a high degree of sculptural talent.
The subjects are native fruits -pineapple,
maniro. broadfruit. Of all
tho pineapple is the favorite work,
with tho artist herself as well as
visitors not that the others are less
worthy in execution, but because
the pineapple is more rich iu do
tails. When the panels are repro
duced iu wood carving they will
form rare pieces of house decora
tion. D. Howard Hitchcock's paintiug
of "Tho Marno Spring" wins admir
ing comments. Its more prominent
values are tho haze, through which
a castle looms grayly. and fine ef
fects of water and shadows. The
picturo is proventod from producing
too sombre feelings by boys playiug
in boats in tho foreground.
W. Thrum and Harry Mist show
meritorious drawings and designs in
pen and ink. A docorativo panel by
Mr. Thrum receives nothing but
praiso. His copy of the architects'
design of the projected Oahu Col
lege building and his mochanical
drawings are also excellent. Mr.
Mist's frame of designs for social
cards, otc, nro admired by every
body who visits tho gallery.
Allen Hutchinson presents sculp
ture iu n different line from tho
works ho has made Honolulu art
lovers familiar with. Most of what
he shows on this occassion are fig
ures of animals, and they will en
hance his reputation as an artist.
There is a snarl on the tiger which
almost gives one a sensation of ter
ror on approaching the object.
Hut where every single work is
strong, it is hard to particularize.
The wild boar aud the dragon,
however, soom to be favorites with
man, while othors take to the lion.
One thing tho League has neglect
ed, to its disadvnutage, to have pub
lished, is its rule that the same work
shall not lo shown at two successive
exhibitions. In consequence each
exhibition is entirely now, aud, al
though many visitors might have
hoped this time to enjoy seeing
some masterpieces of the previous
exhibition, ail must have been agree
ably surprised at the productive
capacity of Honolulu's local artistic
