"During the past week tho Hilo Sugar Comp toy's mill exceeded nny of

"The three roller mill being 20 in. hy Til in. ami the two roller mill :U) in.

Tho Pacific Cable Will Go and Will

(Prom the Montreal Wltm-M.)
Sin: I note your editorial of Nov.
19, with roforeneo to Sir John Pen

that you do not fairly ostimate that
gentleman's position in the cable
world. While it is truo, as you state,
that Sir John and his associates wero
pioneers in the Atlantic cable busi
ness, and took great risk in that en
terprise, nevertheless they were not
there as philanthropists, and did not
neglect to seize and rotain every ad
vantage they could secure in connec
tion with this undertaking. There
are still in Montreal, and elsewhere
throughout Canada, shareholders in
the first Atlantic Cable Company,
who fool that if the original investor
is to be classed as a philanthropist,
then they aro most certainly ontitlod
to this distinction, for they have had
very light dividends, and did not
participate in tho handsome profit
that was divided up among the in
siders at tho time the Newfoundland
Company was absorbed by tho
cured in Newfoundland for a great
many years, it being thought at that
timo that tlio utmost leugth that a
submarine cable could be worked was
from Ireland to Newfoundland, and
those gentlemen thought they had
