. A WONDERFUL LIGHT,
An Illumination Equal to About
800,000,000 Candle Power.
Tho idea of an electric light which,
fed by a current from a dynamo ac
tuated by a forty horse power engine
and giving 7000-candle power can
have Its illuminating power intensi
fied more than 35,000 times, is not
oasy to grasp. It means the projec
tion of a stream of light of about
250,000,000-candlo power, and it is
no wonder that the announcement
that such a light is about to be used
in this country has boon received
with ffoino incredulity in Europe.
Yet this is tho efficiency of the
light which will bo shortly erected
at Firo island for the illumination
of the adjacent coast and the pro
tection of the floot of ships entering
New York harlior. Bearing in mind
that an ordinary oil lamp is about
thirty-eight or forty candle-power,
and then try to imagine the com
bined beam of about 3,000,000 lamps.
The ordinary electric street light
may put down at 100 caudle-power,
and 250,000 of these would about
represent the strength of the Fire
Tho most powerful oil lamp yet
mado is supposed to shine out on a
, clear night for a distanco of thirty
five or forty miles, but tho now light
i will flash its welcome rays to tho in
coming European "liners" when they
aro 120 miles away. Tho light re
volves rapidly and throws out its
beams with tho intensity and speed
of lightning. The motive power
which actuates it is a simple clock
work arrangement contained in a
box two foet square, and although
tho revolving portion of tho light
weighs fifteen tons, tho mechnuism
controlling it is so delicate that the
pressure of two fiugors will turn it.
The valuo of this marvelous lamp
can only bo determined by practical
working, but it promises to represent '
an immense stride in tho science of
coast and liuht-housu illumination.

AN INTERNATIONAL STAMP.
' Proposition to Adopt Ono for tho
Tho American Consul at Ohont
I roports to tho Stato Department

a proposition before othor countries
if J- QZXT&F
European countries aro expected to
adopt such a slump, but tho hopo is
expressed that tho United States
will outer the agreement.
The Consul explains tho advan
tages of sucn a stamp, aud calls at
tention to the existing troubles that
would be obviated by its use. Ho
says at present if a merchant wishes

latter s generosity
pay the postage on his reply.
Especially is this fact true in respect
to foreign representatives abroad.
For example, United States Consuls
in Europe receive many letters of
inquiry without the iuclosuru of a
stamp which, no doubt, many of
their correspondents would send if
there were to be purchased in tho
United States a stamp which was
good for postage abroad.
The German Minister of Posts has
designed such a stamp and formu
lated a plan for its adoption by
some of the members, at least, of the
Postal Uuion. It is understood that
the stamp is to contain the names of
all tho countries in which it will be
current, aud its valuo iu tho cur
rency of each couutry will appear
on its face. W'ushimjton New.
