Roade on Hawaii A Kember'a Death
Annexation the Ooal.
The American League had a very
interesting meeting yesterday even
ing. Speeches wore made by several
people. A. 13. Loebenstein of Hilo
spoke about the roads on Hawaii.
He said that before all things good
roads should be mado to aid the
small landholders on Hawaii to bring
their produco to the landings for
shipment. There were a good many
such people on Hawaii and the rocky
roads hampered them in conveying
their produce to market. Mr. Loe
benstein spoke for over an hour on
this subject, and was applauded at
intervals.
During tho evening Thomas Shan
non's death at the Queen's Hospital
was mentioned, and he being a mem
ber of the American Loague the flag
was ordered to be placed at hall
mast to-day. Shannon was the man
who fell from Ashworth's two-story
building on King street Wednesday
morning, and had his spinal column
injured and his brain affected. He
was a Grand Army man and will bo
buried by that orgauizatiou this af
ternoon. There was also mention mado
about tho despatching of a commis
sion of prominent citizens to Wash
ington before the Bitting of Congress.
It was tho intention ol the league to
despatch those representatives to aid
those already there to forward an
nexation. Auuoxatioti was the
League's aim, aud num-xntiou they
were going to have.
So Thou Xdkawlso.
When ouo sets a caudle in a win
dow on a dark night ho never can
tell how many lost and bewildered
travellers it may guide on their way.
1 once knew a dear old lady who
habitually did it on every dark night.
Tho road that passed her house waa
always forsaken and lonosome
enough, aud houses were far apart.
So, ou the general principle of good
will to men, she placed her caudle in
a sort of projecting window, where
it woulti shine both ways ami do the
most good. She is dead aud goue
now, but let us hope that her family
keeps up the custom. To be sure ft
brought her tuauy a strange guest,
yet nue did what she could for them,
aud never grumbled pay or no pay.
A year or two ago a little book
was printed, containing an accouut
by Mr. Johu iiodsou, of. -Warbovs,
Hunts, of the way he was cured of a
wasting disease by Mother Seigel'a
Curative Syrup a complaint con
tracted iu India, where Mr. itodsou
was once a soldier iu tho British
Army.
This caudle of Hod son's boamod
hopefully iu all directions, aud
among others, its rays fell upou the
eyes of a woman who ueeded light
at that particular time. How it
camo to pass she tolls in a letter,
from whicU we quote the following:
"1 wa," she says, "always healthy
up to May, 1884, when 1 had an at
tack of gastric fever, which left mo
low aud foeblo, 1 had a bad taste
iu tho mouth, aud after everything
I ato I had great paiu in tho cheat
aud sides, aud also dreadful paiu at
tho back aud between tho shoulder
blades, aud a sinking feeling at tho
Sit of tho stomach. My legs treat
led and shook undor me, o I could
uot walk out. Iudeed, it waa aa
much as I could do to get across
tho floor. A dry, backing cough set
in aud shook me very much, and 1
lost a deal of sleep.
"As I grew weakor I was confined
to my bed more aud more, aud my
daughter was obliged to take my
place in doing tho housework. A
doctor attoudeu me for over a year.
Ho tried first one kiud of tuediciuo
aud then another, but none of them
helped me. At tho end of the year
tho doctor said ho could do no more
for me, aud recommeuded mo as a
last resort to try a chauge of air.
"1 had got to despair of ever get
ting better whou a book was seut to
me full of statements from different
people, telling how they had been
mado well of various complaints by
using Mother Suigel's Curative
Syrup, aud 1 read of a young man
living at Warbuys, near me, having
been cured iu a marvellous uiauuer
by this tutdiciuo. 1 got a bottle
from Messrs. I'nlmor ami Sons, Che
mists, Uanisy, and after 1 had takeu
it a vvook 1 lull relief aud gamed
btrougth. 1 mi yjiu'ri l?Jt mr, and, I
have utver looked behiud me since.
1 take an occasional dose of the
Syrup and keep in excelleut health.
1 give you full puruueiiiou to use this
letter at. you think lit. Yours truly,
(Hlgned) Sarah Mason, Hauisey
Heights, Itamsoy, Huuiu, Jauuary
27th, 1802."
What better use could we possi
bly put this lady'd letter to thau to
publish it? lit this way it has fallou
tuto the preseut reader's bauds, aud
may turnout to bo a caudle iu tho
window to show him refuge aud
shelter beside some long and gloomy
path. A word more ou this very
point It is not a matter of choice
whether we are to help one auother.
Wo are uhliyrd aud bound to do so by
every consideration of morality aud
utility. Humuuity is like tho body
of ouo man: if a siuglo part is neg
lected the rest must pay tho penalty.
If, for instance, Mother Seigel's Cur
ative Syrup has douo you good, Bay
so, publish it, make it kuowu. Others
near you may be groping in dark
